Broadening Strands
The Project Board discussed and approved the final version of the Broadening Strand titles at its
meeting on the 23rd May, these were subsequently endorsed by TSEB on the 13th June. The final
versions are below.
Challenging Global Inequalities
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 contemporary inequalities in wealth and human development
 the influence of political systems and human rights on the well-being of individuals and
societies
 unequal access to education, health and welfare services
 the impacts of global environmental change in heightening socio-economic inequalities
Creating Sustainable Futures
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 sustainability as an environmental challenge
 securing economic development that is environmentally sound and socially just
 political and ethical dimensions of resource use
 the role of science and technology in promoting sustainable development
Enterprise and Innovation
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 how businesses operate in theory and in practice
 what drives business innovation, and what influences its success
 socially and environmentally responsible organisations
 the power of international business in today’s world
 the creation of economic and social value through entrepreneurial activity
Ethics, Religion and Law
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 ethical and philosophical perspectives on human nature and society
 the relevance of faith and religion in times past, and in today’s world
 moral standards in private life, the workplace and politics
 crime and punishment; legal and regulatory systems
Exploring the Sciences
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 developments in scientific thought and method
 microbes, plants, animals and the physical environment
 space and the origins of the universe
 sound, energy, light and colour
 computers and computing
 amazing puzzles, beautiful theorems, magical numbers and evolution
Languages and Cross-Cultural Understanding
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 learning a foreign language, as a beginner, or at an advanced level
 the functions of language and how languages function
 translation and communication in a multi-lingual world
 the insights that literature, theatre and film can offer into other societies and places
Media, Culture and Creativity
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:
 creative practice in writing, visual arts, music, theatre, dance and film
 the history, analysis and appreciation of art, literature, music, theatre, dance and film
 technology and creativity, including the potential of new media in today’s world

Mind and Body
In this strand you will find modules that explore topics including:

Searching under this heading will allow you to find modules that adapt academic study to
professional, practical and vocational contexts, and which allow you to develop valuable skills for
graduate success.
Modules in this section will give you opportunities to develop:

 Projects which bring academic work to the wider society
 Work placements and volunteering
