PLANNING AND RESOURCES COMMITTEE, 27 JANUARY 2014

RECRUITMENT AND ADMISSIONS STRATEGY COMMITTEE

During its second year the Committee has met three times to date, with a further three meetings to come in semester 2. It continues to focus on decision making and providing practical guidance and support to Schools. Following contact with school reps over the summer, there are new members from Schools who had not been so active in 2012-13, which has already increased the committee’s cross-school engagement.

The Committee’s meetings in semester 1 focused on:

Widening participation activities and policy and sharing best practice in Schools

Briefings on the review of UG offer making and the new offer making strategy which responds to the external HE context of increased marketization, particularly in the Rest of

UK, with emphasis on earlier offer making and consistent application turnaround times.

There has also been an initial meeting of the International Recruitment Forum, whose core membership is from RASC, but other relevant interested staff are invited to attend according to the agenda. The first Forum focused on the North American market and those in semester 2 will focus on Latin America and Emerging Markets. The exchange of experience from students, the

International office and relevant geographical activity was focused and informative. There will be a review of the Fora at the end of the semester, identifying ways to effectively disseminate the outcomes and identified opportunities, and to support Schools with international recruitment and admissions.

In Semester 2 the Committee will focus on:

 identifying how Schools can be supported with converting PGR applicants (with reference to

UoE Direct Admissions Working group recommendations)

 briefings on UG conversion activities (POVs, Open Days and School specific activity) supported by a new Schools training event led by CHSS Associate Dean, SRA Recruitment and CHSS Marketing Team, piloted in Summer 2013.

 reviewing the undergraduate admissions policy in relation to analysis of data from the 2012-

2013 cycles (UG admissions report being prepared for early March 2014)

 finalising CHSS guidance regarding the Curriculum for Excellence and its implications for

CHSS admissions policy and practices (in liaison with CUGLAT)

 finalising CHSS guidance for applicants with higher qualifications, and positioning this within a College approach to Widening Participation and WP conversion

RASC’s longer term remit of developing a College Strategy for UG and PG student recruitment remains a driver for this committee. It is intended that this is reflected on, taken forward and articulated in more detail in summer 2014.
