EC HW DEFS IN NOTEBOOK FOR GENERAL
Accommodations for ESOLStart on Homework: Progress through Independent research project GENETICS DISORDERS
Student Project/Rubric on Evolution and Diversity of Species
Objective: The objective of this project is to demonstrate research of organisms as they have diversified from
common and primordial ancestors. Students will create a group research PPT presentation based on information
from WEBSITES, LIBRARY/TEXT BASED RESEARCH, and MEDIA.
Group Collaboration: Students will be randomly assigned groups with each student in the group rotating positions
of web researcher(2), text research (2), director of production(1). Students grade will be based on a project rubric
scale. Individual portion of grade will be based on Observed Activity and Group Work Collaboration.
KEY CONCEPTS TO DEMONSTRATE: How is evolution demonstrated through scientific study and fossil record,
Homologous structures (bones, muscles, limbs, organ systems) compared between living and extinct
species(pg.468), adaptations that evolved for survival(461), fossil evidence for extinct species(pg.452) (pg.540),
geologic time periods(pg. 543), adaptive radiation(pg 550), coevolution(pg 551), tree of life or cladogram
representation (pg. 517)(pg. 520), extinction/mass extinction (548), speciation-behavioral isolation, geographic
isolation, temporal isolation (pg. 494), examples of natural selection in specification(487), feeding mechanisms –
Herbivore/Carnivores, what adaptations contributed toward species “survival/fitness”
PPT Guidelines:


15 Slides minimum and prepared for Presentation to class –SLIDE TITLES ARE TO INCLUDE THE WORDS IN
THE KEY CONCEPT BANK (10pts)
STANDARDS BASED Questions needed answered throughout the PPT : (20pts)
-How the theory of evolution is supported by FOSSIL EVIDENCE, COMPARATIVE ANATOMY, and
COMPARATIVE EMBRYOLOGY?
-How are organisms HIERARCHICALLY CLASSIFED and based on evolutionary relationship-?
_How is BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY increased by the origin of new species and how is it decreased by the
process of EXTINCTION ?

Included all key concepts in PPT Slideshow and Presentation(5pts)
Researchers are active in roles during collaborative process-Team Work!(Individual Score-5pts)
Examples are appropriate and display of overall professionalism in production(5pts)
1 Example of embryology-how do these animals reproduce? (gamete fertilization)(5pts)
2Examples to types of feeding-herbivores, carnivores (predators)(prey)(5pts)
2Examples of adaptation (how did the species diversify/survive for natural selection to take place)(5pts)
3 Examples of new species evolving from older ancestors(5pts)
1-References to geologic time periods-when did individual species live?(5pts)
5 Examples(species) of comparative anatomy/embryology (comparing homologous structures in
animals/embryo development(5pts)
Points are evaluated based on demonstration of the criteria of each section stated
ALL SEARCHES USED NEED TO UTILIZE THE ONLY KEYWORDS IN
ORDER TO MAINTAIN SAFETY IN TECHNOLGY BASED EDUCATION
75 TOTAL POINTS
-How is the theory of evolution supported by:
Homologous Structures?
Adaptive radiation?
Fossils/fossil evidence?
Survival of the Fittest?
Extinction?
Embryology?
Biological Diversity?
PRACTICE
Wednesday: Pretest Print; Formulate notes from PPT, GUIDED PRACTICE(space out each concept into 1
page equal spacing) ; review concept, WS: one side PROJECT RUBRIC; one side evolution diagrams.
Thursday: PPT Finish; formulate notes; guided practice; complete guided practice
Friday: Honors PPT creation, General WS Completion
OBJECTIVE : Students will create graphic and/or descriptive notes that include all of the following concepts.

Notes will FOCUS on answering the following questions
-How the theory of evolution is supported the KEY CONCEPTS ?
RUBRIC: The following concepts will be evaluated on the following criteria
10 points: 10 of the terms in the KEY CONCEPTS ARE DEFINED WITH DIAGRAMS OR ILLUSTRATIONS
10 points: 10 of the key terms are neatly sectioned displaying clear organization
10points: 10 key concepts are focusing on evidence of how the theory of evolution is supported?
