First-of-its-kind ‘Bentall surgery’ performed forRare Cardiac and
Muscular-Skeletal Complications at RTIICS, Kolkata
~ Complex & high risk surgery performed over eleven hours~
Kolkata, February 18, 2014: Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences set another
milestone in the field of cardiovascular surgery by performing ‘Bentall procedure’ on a patient suffering
from a dual complication for the first time in East India. The patient was suffering from ‘Type-A Aortic
dissection’ along with a rare disorder of muscular-skeletal system known as ‘Limb Girdle Muscular
Dystrophy*’. Type-A Aortic dissection is one of the most fatal medical conditions where the layers of the
main artery of the body (aorta) become separated from each other. This disease/ condition, is relatively
rare, occurring in 2–3.5 per 100,000 people every year globally. This is also a medical emergency. Since,
this case was a combination of dual complications, the doctors at RTIICS decided to perform an eleven
hour long surgery. Team of doctors from Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences
(RTIICS) headed by Dr. Atanu Saha performed this first of its kind procedure on the patient.
Commenting on the success of the procedure, Dr. Atanu Saha, Consultant-Cardiac Surgery,
Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS),said, “Aortic dissection is
always fatal if not operated immediately and the challenge lies in its early detection and initiation of
surgical treatment. In the case of Mr. Kamala Padi, considering the complexity of the situation, Bentall
surgery was the only option, which is considered as a complex surgery. Bentall surgery was successfully
performed for the first time on a patient suffering from these dual rare conditions in East India.”
A Bentall procedure is a surgical operation usually done in open heart surgeries that concerns the largest
artery – Aorta. The damaged aorta is replaced and coronary arteries are re-implanted into the graft. The
Bentall surgery entails replacement of Aortic valve, aortic root and ascending aorta.
Mr. Komal Padi expressed his gratitude to the team of doctors, saying, “I had lost all hopes of surviving.
I was suffering from this condition for quite some time and was slowly losing my ability to walk. When I
was diagnosed with this condition, I felt my world has come to an end. But, the doctors at RTIICS gave
me the confidence and hope, which makes me a healthy person today to face the world. My heartfelt
thanks to the doctors of RTIICS for giving me a new lease of life”.

Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy* Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy or Erb's muscular dystrophy is an autosomal
class of muscular dystrophy that is similar but distinct from Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Becker's muscular
dystrophy. Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy encompasses a large number of rare disorders. In patients suffering
from this condition, the muscles of the body especially the limb and shoulder girdle muscles get destroyed and are
replaced by fibrous and fatty tissue.
