COURSE DESCRIPTION
The English Language Institute’s (ELI) Breakthrough level course is provides English
environment with small amount of students and learner centered course. This course aims to set
students everyday survival English, skills and strategies to perform in a variety of
communicative situations in English to meet their specific needs. It meets the learning needs of
adults who want to improve their skills in everyday English. The course is designed to help
students improve their reading, pronunciation, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, writing and
study skills. The ELI’s breakthrough course encourages learners to improve their English skills
through activities that target critical thinking, creativity skills, building confidence, autonomy
and collaboration to best help them achieve their lifelong English Language learning goals.
COURSE GOALS
1. Students will acquire the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills necessary to
succeed in everyday English.
2. Students will integrate their reading, writing, and speaking skills to promote thinking and
learning.
3. Students will be active, independent learners able to apply appropriate reading strategies
with increasing confidence.
4. Students will complete courses with at least an 80% average in order to continue on the
next level of courses.
GRADING POLICY
Grading is based on a 100 point scale. A final grade of 80 is required to pass the course.

Participation
Participation is 20 points of your grade. Attendance is not part of your grade. However,
attending class is necessary in order to earn a participation grade. As of the first day of your
enrollment, being late by 15 minutes or more, unauthorized breaks, or early departures will
receive a 0 participation grade for the day. If you miss a class, you are still responsible for
turning in due assignments, finding out about current assignments either from classmates or the
instructor, and completing homework assignments. If you have an excused absence, you may
earn a participation grade by a) stopping by the office to briefly meet with your instructor or b)
having a conversation on the phone with your instructor. Please complete all assignments
before coming to class, so that you are fully prepared to participate.
Your portfolio must contain the following things:








Homework(Students have to return their homework each class day)
Vocabulary list (each words with example sentences, give the vocabulary list 5th week
and 10th week)
A conversation (Students have to write a conversation based on the greetings words)
Write about yourself(Students have to write a paragraph about them)
Introduce your family(Students have to write a short introduction about their family)
Write your daily routine and free time(Students have to write their daily routine and
about free time)
Study plan(Students have to write their plan how to study English)
