Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Option
The University of Southern Indiana is proud to offer approved and/or nationally recognized programs
that lead to teacher licensure. We do not offer transition-to-teaching pathways. Contact the Indiana
Department of Education (IDOE) for more information about alternative routes: www.doe.in.gov or

Prospective teacher candidates who wish to be licensed in early childhood education, elementary
education or special education must complete all the requirements for appropriate major. They should
apply as degree seeking students and will follow the same policies and procedures as traditional degreeseeking students. Contact the Department of Teacher Education for more information: 812-465-7024.
Programs of study are available in the current university bulletin, the Department of Teacher Education
or the Pott College of Science, Engineering, and Education Advising and Resource Center.
The University of Southern Indiana offers the following post-baccalaureate option to a baccalaureate
graduate who wishes to teach secondary (grades 5-12) or all-grades (grades P-12) in a field that is the
same as his/her major (e.g. a person with an undergraduate major in mathematics and he/she wishes
to teach mathematics). Teaching fields for which this program is available include:














Business (grades 5-12)
Biology/Life Science (grades 5-12)
Chemistry (grades 5-12)
Earth/Space Science (grades 5-12)
English/Language Arts (grades 5-12)
French (grades P-12)
German (grades P-12)
Health (P-12)
History (grades 5-12)
Mathematics (grades 5-12)
Physical Education (grades P-12)
Physics (grades 5-12),
Spanish (grades P-12)
Visual Art (grades P-12)
Those who do not have the equivalent of an undergraduate major in one of these fields must pursue a
second degree with the chosen content major and an education minor.

This non-degree program includes traditional day-time courses and extensive fieldwork that can only
be completed when P-12 schools are in session.
Admission Requirements:
1. An undergraduate major in a teaching field with an overall GPA of 2.75
2. Demonstrated proficiency in critical reading, writing and mathematics by passing the Indiana
required test
 The Core Academic Skills Assessment (CASA) with 220 earned on each part (Mathematics,
Reading and Writing) is required. CASA alternatives include an ACT with a score of at least
24 (Mathematics, Reading, Grammar, and Science), SAT with a score of at least 1100 (Critical
Reading and Mathematics), GRE general test with a score of at least 1100 (Verbal and
Quantitative), OR a masters degree from a regionally accredited institution. Praxis I tests
taken on or before August 31, 2013 may be used. (The composite score required is 527 or
individual sub-scores of 176 for Reading, 172 for Writing and 175 for Mathematics.)
3. Demonstrated content knowledge in the teaching area by passing the appropriate Indiana
required content test. Information about the new content tests are available on the following
website: www.in.nesinc.com. [For several years, the Praxis II exams from ETS were the
approved content tests. Praxis II tests taken before May 31, 2014 may be accepted.]

A grade of C or better in each of the following courses.
a. EDUC 206 Introduction to Exceptional Needs (3 hrs)
b. EDUC 221 Diversity and Equity in Education (3 hrs)
Note: All tests listed above in admission requirements must be passed prior to taking
EDUC 292 or 283.
c. P-12 Areas EDUC 292 Explorations in Elementary Education & Schooling OR
5-12 Areas EDUC 283 Explorations in Secondary Education and Schooling (3 hrs)
d. EDUC 383 Secondary Analysis of Curriculum and Pedagogy (3 hrs) [Co-req is 384]
e. EDUC 384 Advanced Clinical Experiences in Secondary Schools (3 hrs) [Co-req is 383]
f. EDUC 463 Professional Issues in Education (3 hrs) [co-req is 473]
g. EDUC 473 Supervised Teaching (9 hrs) [co-req is 463]
Note: At the conclusion of the program, an appropriate Pedagogy test is required prior to applying for
licensure (www.in.nesinc.com).
