Job Title: Conservation Scientist, King Khalid Wildlife Research Centre, Saudi Arabia
Department/section: Conservation Programmes Department, West and North Africa

Reporting Structure: The post holder will report directly to the Director of KKWRC.
Location: The position will be based at KKWRC in Thumamah, 1 hour outside of Riyadh,
with a considerable amount of time in the field.
Duration: The initial contract will be until the end of 2016 and renewable on an annual basis.
Salary: SR170,000-SR215,000
commensurate with experience.

Benefits: Annual return flight to Saudi Arabia; visa; insurance under ZSL’s group travel
insurance policy and KKWRC’s medical insurance in Saudi Arabia; accommodation at

Overall purpose of job: Lead KKWRC’s conservation science research and monitoring
programme.
Project Outline:
ZSL have been managing KKWRC for the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) since 1989. The
Centre’s major activities comprise conservation science research and monitoring inside
protected areas and running the largest captive breeding programmes in the world for
mountain gazelles, sand gazelles and Nubian ibex. Ecological, epidemiological and genetic
research is also carried out on these captive animals and wild populations in protected areas
across Saudi Arabia. KKWRC has carried out reintroductions into three protected areas in
Saudi Arabia and continues to monitor these populations whilst planning future
reintroductions.
Main responsibilities:






Develop and implement new wildlife research and monitoring projects for KKWRC in
consultation with other KKWRC staff.
Continue post release monitoring of reintroduced populations.
Carry out surveys and monitoring in protected areas to provide data to inform
protected area management.
Assist other KKWRC staff with research projects, data analysis and preparation of
publications.
Collaborate with and train Saudi Wildlife Authority staff in survey and monitoring
techniques and other research techniques.
To undertake appropriate administrative tasks and project reporting.
