Massey University Pasifika Doctoral Scholarships
Our mission: to empower Pasifika students and communities to achieve their social and economic aspirations
through excellence in education, research, and leadership.
The Pasifika Doctoral Scholarships are offered to encourage full -time doctoral studies at Massey University and are
open to current domestic and international students. Applicants must be pre-enrolled with an excellent academic
record.
The Pasifika Doctoral Scholarships will be awarded on academic ranking in October each year to ten Pasifika
students.
Value
The value of the Doctoral Scholarship shall be $3,000 per annum.
Application Process
The application process is based on a combined application consisting of the supervisory team’s recommendation
and a completed application form from the candidate.
Eligibility





The Doctoral Scholarships are open to Pacific students who are enrolled or eligible to enrol full-time for a
research paper of 120 credits during a 12 month period towards a doctoral degree at Massey University. A
full-time candidate will be expected to work 40 - 50 hours per week on their doctoral qualification. Part-time
applicants are also eligible.
Applicants already holding a PhD are not eligible to apply.
Applicants who are completing Honours or Master’s theses or research reports must ensure that their work
is at the submission stage before they apply for the Doctoral Scholarship.
Consideration will normally only be given to students with a GPA score of 7.5 or better (on a 9 point scale).
This is above an average grade of A-.
No Doctoral Scholarship payments will be made to applicants if, for whatever reason, the applicant is not
actively involved full-time in his/her approved programme of research.
Term
Every Doctoral Scholarship shall be tenable at Massey University for up to a maximum period of 36 months devoted
to full-time research. No tenure beyond 36 months will be permitted. No retrospective payments will be permitted
unless approval into the Doctoral programme was delayed for reasons beyond the applicant's control.
Tenure
The tenure of the Doctoral Scholarships shall commence within the current year. No deferrals beyond these dates
are permitted, except, in exceptional circumstances, with written approval from the Chair of the Scholarships
Committee.

Conditions of the Award:


The successful candidate will provide permission to the Pasifika Directorate at Massey University to use their
profile and photo at no cost to Massey University for recruitment and marketing activities.
The successful candidate to provide a written statement of no less than 150 words at the end of the semester to
demonstrate how the scholarship has benefited their educational journey at Massey University.
