JOB SUMMARY
SALARIED GP will be expected to adhere to the professional standards as set out by the General Medical Council.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Activities
Patient Contact Activities
Consultations
a) The SALARIED GP will conduct consultations with patients in a variety of ways:
 Face to face consultations, taking place either in the surgery or in the patient’s home.
 Telephone consultations
 Electronic consultations
b) The SALARIED GP will be expected to see both registered patients, and unregistered patients, as
determined by the policy of the site.
c) The SALARIED GP will be expected to manage patients presenting with acute illnesses (including
medical emergencies) and chronic illnesses, as far as would be expected of a general practitioner.
d) The SALARIED GP will be expected to request appropriate tests and investigations on patients, and to
take responsibility for following up the results.
e) The SALARIED GP will be expected to make appropriate referrals for patients, both in emergency
situations, and non-emergency situations.
f) The SALARIED GP will be expected to conduct consultations in a timely manner.
g) The SALARIED GP will be expected to maintain confidentiality of patients as set out by the General
Medical Council.
h) The SALARIED GP will be expected to keep complete, contemporaneous records.
i) The SALARIED GP will be expected to be familiar with READ Coding and to use appropriate codes in
record-keeping.
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
A. The SALARIED GP will be expected to promote national and local screening programmes to patients, and to
be involved in the screening process wherever possible.
B. The SALARIED GP will manage patients with chronic diseases, in line with current guidelines. This includes
arranging appropriate tests and investigations, managing medication, and arranging appropriate follow up.
C. The SALARIED GP will follow local and national recommendations regarding prescribing, and will ensure that
their prescribing is appropriate and cost-effective.
Administrative Activities
D. All administrative activities will be co-ordinated by the administrative team, working under the guidance of the
Practice Manager. The SALARIED GP will be allocated appropriate time to complete these activities, and will
be expected to complete all activities as described below:
 Incoming letters and results as per the local protocol.
 Check and sign repeat prescriptions,
 Medical reports.

Targets
a) The SALARIED GP will be expected to work with the Practice Manager and Clinical Lead in order to achieve
the targets within the following frameworks:
 Quality and Outcomes Framework
 Prescribing Targets
 Public Health Targets
 Key Performance Indicators
b) The SALARIED GP, under the direction of the Practice Manager and Clinical Lead, will be asked to take on
responsibility for specific targets within these frameworks.
Education and Practice Development
a) The SALARIED GP is expected to maintain their own education at the level required to work as a SALARIED
GP
b) The SALARIED GP is expected to attend weekly clinical meetings in their site.
c) The SALARIED GP is expected to plan and utilise their Continuing Professional Development time in an
appropriate manner, and to ensure that their usage of Continuing Professional Development time is planned
jointly with the Clinical Lead GP.
d) The SALARIED GP is expected to stay up to date in mandatory aspects of training.
e) The SALARIED GP is expected to make themselves aware of relevant professional guidelines, and follow
those guidelines in practice. The SALARIED GP should ensure that they are aware of updates to professional
guidelines
f) The SALARIED GP is expected to complete an annual NHS Appraisal as well as an annual DMC Appraisal.
Risk Management
a) The SALARIED GP is expected to participate in clinical governance at the site.
b) The SALARIED GP will take a proactive approach to reporting significant events and critical incidents. The
SALARIED GP will use the systems set up by DMC Healthcare for this purpose.
c) The SALARIED GP will participate in a programme of clinical audit, based at the site. This programme will be
co-ordinated by the Clinical Lead GP.
d) The SALARIED GP will be expected to follow the DMC Health and Safety Policy.
e) The SALARIED GP will be expected to maintain appropriate professional indemnity cover at all times.
Teamworking
a) The SALARIED GP is expected to be an active member of the clinical team. This includes communicating
effectively and in a professional manner with other team members
b) The SALARIED GP must ensure that they are completing a fair and reasonable share of the overall workload
of the clinical team.
JOB DESCRIPTION REVISION
This job description is intended to provide an outline of the key tasks and responsibilities only. There may be other
duties required of the post holder commensurate with the position. The responsibilities may be amended, after
discussion with the post holder, to take into account the development of both the post and the practice. All members of
staff should be prepared to take on additional duties or relinquish existing duties in order to maintain the effective
running of the practice.
