Use the space below to report any interesting facts or statistics about your head coach, individual players, team or school
in general that might be of interest to news media covering the FHSAA Boys Basketball Finals.
In the Regional Semi-Final victory over Sarasota Riverview CJ McGill became the fourth 1,000 point scorer in Wharton
basketball school history. CJ ranks fourth behind AJ Astroth (Vanderbilt), Shawn Vanzant (Butler), & Xavier Owens
(Mount Saint Mary’s).
CJ McGill has started every game as a varsity point guard since his freshman year (2009-10). He missed the entire
2010-11 season with a torn ACL suffered in September, 2010. His career record as a varsity starting point guard is 7510. Had he not injured his knee in the 2010-11 pre-season he would have most certainly finished as the school’s all-time
leading scorer, career leader in wins and most games played in a varsity career.
Chase Litton is rated as one of the top high school quarterback prospects in the state of Florida for the Class of 2014. He
has already received scholarship offers from LSU and USF.
Wharton Basketball has never had a losing season since the school opened in 1997-98. The all-time school basketball
record is 339-116.
CJ McGill, Sir Patrick Reynolds, Jaken Grier, Virgil Crump & Chase Litton are all three-year varsity lettermen.
Wharton has won four consecutive District Championships.
Wharton High School was founded in 1997. The school is named for the long-time Hillsborough County school teacher
and administrator, Paul R. Wharton. Ironically, Mr. Wharton was a native of Kentucky and grew up as a big fan of the
University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.
Coach Tommy Tonelli played college basketball at the University of South Florida (1982-86) under legendary head coach
Lee Rose (two NCAA Final Fours UNCC – 1977 & Purdue – 1980). While at USF Coach Tonelli was a three year starter,
two year team captain, played in two NIT post-season tournaments, and finished his career as the all-time leader in
assists and steals. He lead the Sun Belt Conference in assists as a junior and free throw percentage as a senior. He
was awarded the Jerry D. Young Memorial Award by the Sun Belt Conference in 1986 given to the men’s basketball
player that best exemplified playing ability, scholarship, leadership, and sportsmanship. He was also named as the
“Outstanding Senior” for the University of South Florida graduating class of 1986. Coach Tonelli also served as an
assistant coach at USF from 1986-96 under Bobby Paschal and again in 2007-09 under Stan Heath. Coach Tonelli
remains the only player in USF basketball history to play and coach in a post season game for the Bulls. As a player he
participated in the NIT in 1983 & 1985. As an Assistant Coach he participated in the NCAA Tournament in 1990 & 1992
and NIT in 1991 & 1995.
Coach Tonelli is a native of Chicago, Illinois where he attended Loyola Academy and also served as a five year ball boy
for the Chicago Bulls under head coach Jerry Sloan.
Coach Tonelli earned his 300th career win as a head coach, all while at Wharton High School, this season (December
29th) against St. Petersburg-Lakewood High School during the Northeast Holiday Tournament.
