The Louisiana Division of Archaeology is seeking applicants for an Archaeologist I Collections Manager
position in our Baton Rouge, Louisiana, office. The position description and required skills and
knowledge are outlined below. This is a 4-year job appointment position with health insurance,
vacation and sick leave, and retirement. Salary range is $27,914 to $55,598 with specific salary
dependent on qualifications and experience.
B.A. in anthropology or closely related field is required, an M.A. is desired. Practical experience in
archaeological curation procedures and processes is required. Field experience in archaeology is
desirable, as is experience with the Section 106 process.
The primary responsibilities of this position are:







Manage the Division of Archaeology’s curation facility, including collections and associated
records, to meet the standards of the Division and federal regulations (36CFR79);
Accession all new collections submitted to the Division;
Assign new catalog numbers as requested by agencies, contractors, and clients;
Maintain the curation databases and ensure they are kept up to date, and maintain all paper
and electronic records as required by the standards and regulations;
Respond to requests from other parties for information and consultation concerning curation
and conservation of archaeological materials;
Prepare and manage loans of archaeological materials, and work with the Division’s Outreach
Coordinator to review text and other exhibit elements; and
With Division staff, consult with federal agencies and Native American Tribes on matters
relating to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
Required skills and abilities:





Experience with archaeological curation processes and procedures;
Familiarity with archaeological field, laboratory, and analysis methods;
Working knowledge of the federal curation regulations 36CFR79 and National Park Service
Museum Best Practices;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Access, and Word; and
Ability to communicate clearly and accurately via phone, email, letter, and in person about the
Division’s curation policies and standards.
Desired skills and abilities:


Archaeological field experience;
Knowledge of the Section 106 process.
