FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, February 13, 2015 - Experience an extraordinary journey into the
mysterious world of one of nature’s most awe-inspiring marine mammals, Humpback Whales.
The 3D film takes audiences to the underwater world of the far away places where Humpbacks
live and thrive. From the clear turquoise waters of the South Pacific to Africa, Hawaii and
Alaska, this ocean adventure will reveal what we know about this giant mammal and what
mysteries scientists are determined to solve.
Captured for the first time with IMAX® 3D cameras, and found in every ocean on earth,
humpbacks were nearly driven to extinction 50 years ago, but today are making a steady
recovery. Join a team of researchers as they unlock the secrets of the humpback and find out
what makes humpbacks the most acrobatic of all whales, why only the males sing, and why these
intelligent, fifty-foot animals migrate more than 6,000 miles round-trip every year.
“Humpback Whales are simply fascinating creatures. Audiences will get an immersive look at
how these whales communicate, sing, feed, play and take care of their young on the biggest
screen in South Florida,” said President/CEO Kim Cavendish.
Humpback Whales is produced and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films and presented
by Pacific Life. A One World One Ocean production, Humpback Whales is directed by twotime Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Greg MacGillivray (The Living Sea, Dolphins) and
produced by Shaun MacGillivray (To The Arctic, Journey to the South Pacific).
Filmed in 15/70mm, Humpback Whales is written and edited by Stephen Judson (Everest,
Journey to the South Pacific). The musical score is by Steve Wood (Journey to the South Pacific,
To The Arctic).
MacGillivray Freeman Films is the world’s leading independent producer and distributor of
giant-screen 70mm films with 38 films for IMAX theatres to its credit. Throughout the
company’s 50-year history, its films have won numerous international awards including two
Academy Award® nominations and three films inducted into the IMAX Hall of Fame.
Humpback Whales follows in the company’s long tradition of films known for their artistry and
celebration of science, and for calling attention to the natural world.
ABOUT THE AUTONATION® IMAX 3D THEATER
The AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater, owned and operated by the Museum of Discovery and
Science, opened in 1992. In September 2014, the 300-seat AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater
underwent an extensive renovation including a new giant screen (60 ft. x 80 ft.), new luxury
seats, new powerful sound system and the addition of a digital projection system to complement
the 15/70 film projector. The new dual IMAX projection system allows both digital and 15/70
IMAX films to be shown, offering a more consistent flow of new Hollywood films in addition to
classic documentaries. The IMAX Experience® is an unparalleled fusion of sight and sound.
Audiences will enjoy five-story high images of unsurpassed brilliance and clarity as they’re
immersed in 32,000 watts of digital surround sound broadcast through 56 speakers. And the
special geometry of our theater makes you feel as though you're immersed in the action. You're
just not seeing the movie --- you're part of it. Both 2D and 3D films are shown in the theater and
3D films are viewed using special IMAX® 3D glasses. The AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater is
home to the BIGGEST screen in South Florida and is one of only three Certified Giant Screen®
