Growing community gardens
Moonee Valley City Council is holding a free public workshop in partnership with City West
Water on managing community gardens. The ‘growing community gardens’ event is part of
Council’s popular environment forum series, and takes place on Wednesday, 24 June, 7pm9pm.
Moonee Valley Mayor, Cr Narelle Sharpe said the free workshop will provide advice for those
interested in learning more about community gardens or for those already involved with one
but looking for tips on how to grow its membership.
“The forum will feature expert speakers on topics such as garden governance, management,
marketing and fundraising. The speakers will also give tips on managing community gardens
for climate change adaptation into the future.
“With the growth of apartments and townhouses in the inner city, more and more people are
turning to community gardens as a shared resource. Not only do they give people a place to
grow their own food and learn gardening tips, they also provide an invaluable sense of
community and a space to connect with the natural world,” Cr Sharpe said.
Environmental sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Shirley Cornish, said there are currently eight
community gardens in Moonee Valley.
“The gardens are spread across the council area on reserves, at neighbourhood houses and
on public housing estates and are used by a broad range of people.
“Council wants to see these gardens flourish and we want to ensure that the community is
supported to do so.”
