Program Announcement: Dr. Sidney McNairy, Jr. RCMI Small Grant Program at UTSA
Synopsis: The purpose of the Dr. Sidney McNairy, Jr. RCMI Small Grant Program at UTSA is to encourage scientific
researchers to use the four RCMI Research Core facilities to conduct research leading to scientific discovery. This
program will provide gratis access to equipment and support staff of our Core facilities to complete a short 6-month
research project of high scientific merit.
PI Eligibility: UTSA and non-UTSA research scientists are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to RCMI scientists
at UTSA and scientists working in other RCMI programs that are lacking financial support.
Core Services Provided by Grant:
 Biophotonics Core
Assessment Page Contact: George.Perry@utsa.edu and Brandi.betts@utsa.edu
1. Light-based imaging technologies, from basic brightfield techniques to advanced fluorescence-based imaging.
2. Zeiss 510 Confocal with 7 laser lines and 3 channel detectors, including the Meta detector which allows the
simultaneous imaging of numerous fluorophores without the problem of spectral overlap.
3. Zeiss 710 Live Cell System to image deeply into live, intact tissues.
4. Personal training in the use of all our instrumentation (by appointment) to personally assist users in their imaging
experiments.
5. Consultation in experimental design and optimization for all investigators.
6. Personal training in the most current methods of image analysis and all hardware and software (in conjunction
with the RCMI Computational Systems Biology Core).
 Computational Systems Biology Core
Assessment Page Contact: Jianhua.Ruan@utsa.edu and Zhiwei.Wang@utsa.edu
1. Hardware, software and programming script support.
2. Computational analysis of genomic and proteomic data and software customization.
3. All other high performance computing services for any research project.
 Nanotechnology and Human Health Core
Assessment Page Contact: Arturo.Ponce-pedraza@utsa.edu and Miguel.yacaman@utsa.edu
1. Access, training and support for researchers needing to investigate and/or characterize samples using High
Resolution Electron microscopes, Atomic Force microscopes, and Scanning Probe microscopes.
2. Assist researchers to solve their particular research problem with the use of the most advanced techniques of
microscopy while assisting with sample preparation, observation, and analysis.
3. One of the few in the United States that are simultaneously developing new techniques for material science and
biology.
 Protein Biomarkers Core
Assessment Page Contact: Stephen.Bach@utsa.edu and Wendell.Griffith@utsa.edu
1. Analysis of samples (qualitative and/or quantitative large-scale protein analysis by LC/MS/MS with protein
database searching).
2. Tandem mass tagging (TMT) based protein biomarker discovery projects.
3. Cancer and health disparities projects.

Submission of Proposal: Submit the Application: Dr. Sidney McNairy, Jr. RCMI Small Grant Program at UTSA (email or
mail) to RCMI@utsa.edu or 1 UTSA Circle, BSE 2.304B, San Antonio, TX 78249. There is no application deadline, but PIs
are encouraged to submit applications one month prior to their project start date to allow time for review and
approval. Please Note: Once submission is complete, PIs must provide a copy to Core Leader and Director of the Core
so they may complete the assessment page prior to submission. Once the assessment page is complete, PIs may submit
application to individual named above.
Review and Approval: All proposals will be reviewed internally at UTSA. Research projects with strong scientific merit,
high potential for new funding, and strong relevance to the RCMI program will receive favorable recommendations.
Drs. Perry and Tsin, PIs of UTSA’s RCMI program, will provide final approval and notify PIs.
Acknowledgement and Reporting Requirements: Prior to research project commencement, the PI must accept the
requirement to acknowledge RCMI support in related publications and to submit a progress report within 90 days from
the end date of the research project. Resulting publications must be registered with PubMed Central in a timely
manner and include the following acknowledgement: “This project was supported by a grant from the National
Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities from the National Institutes of Health (G12MD007591).”
Contact Information: For further details or inquiries, please contact Ms. Brittanii Rogers, RCMI Research Project
Coordinator, BSE 2.304B, 210-458-7741, Brittanii.Rogers@utsa.edu.
