Hello everyone!
Our first event was a great turn out! The Biology Club officers and sponsors would like to give a special
thanks to Patty Kustron for taking her time to come and give us a wonderful presentation of the
research opportunities through OTS. I found it extremely interesting and am considering applying for
one of the programs, myself.
For those of you that did not make it, here are a few notes of what Patty discussed:

OTS has Semester and Summer programs in both Costa Rica and South Africa. The Semester
Programs include “Tropical Biology on a Changing Planet” in Costa Rica, “Global Health” in Costa
Rica, and “African Ecology and Conservation” in South Africa. The Summer Programs include
“Tropical Biology” in Costa Rica and “Global Health Issues” in South Africa.
Funding is available for these programs with application for scholarship.
Our own undergraduate, Andrew Sanders, participated in the NAPIRE program (Native American
and Pacific Islander Research Experience) in Costa Rica and spoke with us briefly about his
experience. He will soon be flying to the state of Washington to present his research at a
conference! Andrew’s email address is ajs005@uark.edu if you would like to contact him with
any questions about his experience.
OTS is a wonderful research experience, and a great way to network and gain mentors. This is
definitely a great opportunity for anyone wanting to attend graduate school or any professional
school after graduation!

This Friday we have a lecture from Jane Goodall for free at Barnhill Arena at 7:00pm. The UALR Biology
club will also be here so it will be a great opportunity to connect with them.
Also, this Saturday we have a service opportunity! Come help restore Mullins Creek from 8:30am12:00pm! More information about both events is posted on the Biology club website:
