Question: Compare and contrast western and eastern medicine.
The development of medical technique changes human's life dramatically. In ancient time,
there is no idea of medicine so people just let injury to heal up naturally or did
unprofessional treatment like home remedy. As times goes on, medicine develops
systematically and be professional. There are similarity and difference between eastern
medicine and western medicine.
One of the big difference is basis of philosophy. Eastern medicine thinks that Qi is base
of human and qi is most important thing in medicine. However western medicine thinks
that humans can handle nature and they believe outside substance cause illness so they
can control the sickness. In addition, Eastern consider mental and physical is one and
connected so their all medical care is based on psychosocial. In contrast, western thinks
mind and body are different thing and not connected. These basic background makes
totally different ways of treatment.
second, Eastern medicine treats the whole person but western medicine treats the
damaged part of the body. It means eastern is more general and western is more
sectional and specific. If you go to the Chinese acupuncture and herbal clinic, doctor may
examine a patient overall. It focus on preventing disease. However when you visit western hospital,
doctor will ask you where do you ache and treat just aching part. It gives priority to fix disease after it
happens.
However there are similarity between eastern medicine and western medicine. Both have
same purpose and goal. they pursue a patient's recovery and health.
In summary, there are many differences between eastern and western medicine but their
purpose to achieve is same. Like this, we have to bridge the medicine of eastern and
western and should be harmonized to supplement their weakness. Then modern medical
