Shadowing Experience. Dr. Andrea Cox, Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine.
· Learned about research being done on the Hepatitis C virus and the mechanisms
behind cell failure that occur when the virus transitions from acute to chronic.
· Gained experience working with pipets and learned how to best preserve samples
being used for research.
Lab Experience. Dr. Susanne Wells, Children’s Research Hospital.
- Under the mentorship of PhD student Marie Matrka learned basic lab techniques
including DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, IHC, Hematoxylin and Eosin
Staining (H&E), RNA isolation, qPCR, the Luciferase assay, and Western blotting.
- Also gained experience working with mice in a research setting.

Relay for Life. Cancer Education Committee.
· A program aimed at educating the general public about cancer so that steps to
prevent the spread of cancer can be put in place.
· Educated the community about cancer prevention by participating in a school
wide event called Paint the Campus Pink and Purple and recruited new members
to Colleges Against Cancer; collected flyers and posted them up around campus.
Caducea
· Served as a camp counselor for the Camp for Courageous Kids, a camp where
children with chronic illnesses like sickle cell can go to have fun.
