1. Planned activities for 2014
DAI is established the as a means of sharing and exchanging history and culture with communities
both within Kuwait and out. To support and help to fulfil this mission the UNDP /DAI programme
planned a series of activities and training sessions. The training, in particular, is addressed internally
to staff and outside by reaching the community with public lectures and debates, by involving the
volunteers in actively participating to the events, by creating network with other cultural
institutions.
- Training in artifact conservation (ongoing)
In coordination with DAI collection office and conservation department the program will continue
to train and instruct local assistant conservation in object care, conservation and keeping.
- Training in Building restoration (museum) and exhibition design (ongoing)
In coordination with DAI engineering department the program will continue to train and instruct
local assistant engineers in following the restoration phases of KNM and to design the galleries of
the ACC.
- Training in educational program for Museum
In coordination with DAI educational department this project will train and instruct local team in
building efficient educational programs in support of the temporary or permanent exhibition, in
support of the museum activities, the cultural season and all the other events.
- Docent and junior docent training program (ongoing)
A docent is a DAI volunteer trained to receive patrons and guide them through the exhibitions or
address them in regards of the events happening at DAI. The docent receives a brief training on all
the fiend in which DAI is involved. In coordination with educational department of DAI this program
aims to enhance the community involvement into the museum life and activities by training
volunteers.
- Basic training in security for museum staff (ongoing)
This program aims to enhance the capability of DAI security staff to schedule and put in action all
the necessary precautions to secure the exhibition space.
- Internship program
In coordination with DAI media department the internship program targets college students who
have majors in museum and culture-related fields, such as communication, graphic design, history,
art history. Interns will be trained and involve to work within the museum activities accordingly to
their background.

- Knowledge exchange (local / national)
Academic collaboration. In coordination with DAI media and educational department this project
will involve the academic community to participate to the cultural season and to actively
collaborate to museum activities, such as workshops and lectures. Some preliminary contacts and
plans were settled with Gulf University Science and Technology (GUST) in order to discuss and
shape a short term and long term collaboration project for this year. A research program, as
preliminary step towards a possible exhibition of Kuwaiti architecture will go on for all 2014 in
collaboration with the American University of Kuwait (AUK). Moreover the conference “This to that.
Tradition in Transition” proposed by Kuwait University, College of Architecture and the American
Institution of Architectural Students – Kuwaiti chapter, will be organized in collaboration with DAI in
early February.
International Museum Day. This yearly event is organized by the International Council of Museum
(ICOM). Every year around 30.000 museum in 120 countries participate to this major event. DAI
will participate for the second time. The title, and the subject, for 2014 is “Museum collections
make connections” therefore DAI will create the network within the museum community in Kuwait.
This event will take place in May 2014. It will gather for the first time all the major private and
public museums of Kuwait on a possible panel discussion about the present situation, with the aim
to strengthening relations and partnership.
Cultural Season. DAI cultural season is one of the most important outreach of the institution. It has
been ongoing for almost 20 years and it features the world’s leading scholars of Islamic art and
culture. The season offers to Kuwait weekly lectures and debates. It is joined by the DMC, the Dar
al-Athar al-Islamiyyah Music Circle, which is a community-based programme that brings music to
the community weekly during the cultural season.
- Knowledge transfer (Regional)
DAI travelling exhibitions plan will coordinate, co-organize, and co-install a series of exhibitions in
the neighboring countries, exchanging with partner museum, not only artefact, but also knowledge
of objects conservation and care, objects transportation and installation, etc. For 2014 DAI planned
to have the following venues:
Doha, Qatar. Museum of Islamic Art. Loan to the temporary exhibition “Kings and Pawns”.
DAI conservation team will participate to the 10th LACONA conference “Laser in conservation of the
artworks” in Sharjah (UAE) in June 2014. The Forum will be the occasion for networking among
researchers and communication of new initiatives and projects.
More events are currently under consideration or waiting for the final approval.

- Knowledge transfer (International)
DAI travelling exhibitions plan will coordinate, co-organize, and co-install a series of exhibitions in
collaboration with international institutions, exchanging with partner museum, not only artefact,
but also knowledge of objects conservation and care, objects transportation and installation, etc.
For 2014 DAI planned to have the following venues:
Houston, USA. Museum of Fine Arts. Long term loan “Arts of Islamic Lands: Selections from The alSabah Collection, Kuwait
Moscow, Russia. The Kremlin. Loan to the temporary exhibition “Indian Jewels that enhance the
world”.
Sevilla, Spain. Hospital de los Venerables. Loan to the temporary exhibition “Nur: Light in Art and
Science from the Islamic World”.
More events are currently under consideration or waiting for the final approval.
2. Key developments / objectives
The key developments for the project in 2014 will be the following:
A. Triggering and following the construction phase for the planned civil works on the KNM buildings 3
& 4 – Phase 4. Finalize all the specifications for the fifth phase and have them approved and
consequently tendered.
B. Supporting the NCCAL in solving the pending issue on the new collection office of the KNM in order
to make possible the DAI collection re-location the soonest.
C. Strengthening the communication abilities of DAI in order to promote its cultural activities and be
more efficient in addressing the potential public.
D. Completing all the formal procedures in order to activate the planned experts’ missions (see Project
Staff Timeline) to empower the ongoing training program in conservation and education.
E. Strengthening DAI internal technical capabilities to develop and deliver cultural events, with
particular emphasis on exhibitions, as the sharpest tool of local cultural development.
F. Enhancing the process of Knowledge Exchange between DAI and other cultural institution (public
and private-sector institutions, non-governmental organizations and individuals), in particular
within the “South to South” UN program framework, for a better regional integration, for a more
advance technology transfers, for exchanging solutions and expertise by sharing experts..
G. Strengthening the collaboration between UNDP, DAI and GSSCPD in tangible cultural events

H. Promoting the roles and the achievements of the collaboration between the bodies involved (DAI,
UNDP, GSSCPD) at local, regional and international scale.
3. In order to achieve the above mentioned the project shall support DAI to:
(letters refer to the list above):
A1. Provide training to the DAI local engineers to follow up the construction phase and to assure that all
the decisions and actions will meet DAI standards and needs in the display of the collection (KNM).
A2. Provide training to the DAI local engineers in dealing with this level of complexity in building
construction, site supervision and tender management (KNM).
A3. Train / Give guidance according to the International Best Practices to shape the next stage tender
for KNM.
B1. Train / Give guidance to local DAI employees in all the steps needed for preparing the spaces in the
new collection office (building 9 - KNM).
B2. Train / Give guidance to DAI local employees in all the steps needed for preparing the objects for
the relocation in the new collection office (building 9 - KNM).
B3. Train / Give guidance to DAI local employees in all the steps needed in terms of logistics and
transportation (KNM).
C1. Procure of specific expertise to build up the knowledge of managing communication strategies in
DAI media department (output 4).
D1. Recruit the necessary experts as planned in the master document of the project and as
implemented here below (see point 3 and 4 in this document).
E1. Support and promote the planning, the design and the production of new in house exhibition as
one of the key vehicle of cultural communication for the museum.
E2. Continue the ongoing training sessions and activities in the field of conservation/restoration of
artifacts and of buildings; continue the ongoing training sessions and activities in the field education
program for museum.
G1. Support and promote events which will involve local and regional partners, such as the Museum
Day (planned for May 2014) and a possible DAI collection - exhibition in the UAE (planned for the
summer 2014), and others. All these events will highlight how DAI is a center of excellence in its field
and how DAI is a major contribution to the museum network in the State of Kuwait and in the GCC.
G2. Support and promote events which will involve international museum partners, such as exhibition
planned for 2014 in USA (planned for fall 2014) and Europe (early 2014).

H1. Support, prepare and give indicative sessions /presentations to UN officials in visit to Kuwait, in
order to demonstrate the achievements of the collaboration between DAI, UNDP and GSCPD to create
a center of excellence in the cultural field.
4. Project Staff
4.1 Project staff confirmation / renewal
The project shall confirm the renewal of following figures:
-
Project Manager (Ref. 1): the major duties include to manage the project, to coordinate with the other
experts, to lead and follow all the task mentioned above (with a particular emphasis on A 1,2,3) . The
PM is also acting as an Exhibition design consultant to advise DAI in the KNM project and in all the
other issues that are involving museum galleries and fit outs.

Wood and stone conservator (Ref. 2): acting as head of conservation, the main duties include to lead,
train and advice the local assistant conservators. This expert also will act as a technical coordinator
with the other incoming experts in conservation.
4.2 Incoming experts (positions approved in 2013 for 2014)
The project shall call for the following experts:

Expert in conservation: archaeological metal (Ref. 3). This expert’s duty is to coordinate with the head
of conservation to prepare specific type of objects for the relocation and the future display. Moreover
the expert will advise and provide training to the local assistant conservators.

Expert in conservation: ivory (Ref. 4). This expert’s duty is to coordinate with the head of conservation
to prepare specific type of objects for the relocation and the future display. Moreover the expert will
advise and provide training to the local assistant conservators.

Expert in educational program for museums (Ref. 5). This expert is needed to stat the development of
the contents that the KNM and the collection will deliver. The Museum shall start planning in advance
the level of communication and education in order to meet international standard. The Expert will
coordinate with DAI educational department, will advise on the set up of the educational plan and
provide training to local DAI employees about communication and education.

Expert in in Cultural Communication Strategy and Media Program.for Museums and communication for
art educational institutions (Ref. 6).

4.3 New Positions
The project shall propose the new following positions to enhance DAI as Center of Excellence:
Expert in conservation: archaeological conservator (Ref. 4). This expert’s duty is to coordinate with the
head of conservation to prepare specific type of objects for the relocation and the future display.
Moreover the expert will advise and provide training to the local assistant conservators

Expert in private/public foundation or trust for museum (Ref. 8). This position is needed to support DAI
to develop a new corporate structure consistent and more appropriate with the time and with the new
possible scenario in the KNM. (6 months)

Expert in Project development (Ref. 9). This position is needed to support the PM to produce the
content and the relative strategies which will shape the new DAI project proposal for 2015-2018. (6
months)

Project assistant – Admin (Ref. 10). This position is needed to assist in the overall management of the
administrative services, processes and transactions of the project. (6 month)
