LISTENING ACTIVITY
Family Vocabulary Activity (video-listening)
Proficiency Level/Class: Spanish 101
Listening activity to be included in today's lesson: Talking about family members and what they do
Estimated Time of activity: 10-20 minutes
Chapter to be covered during activity: Capítulo 4 - ¿Cómo es tu familia? / Pages: 139-142 /
First day of Chapter 4 *Textbook: Mosaicos (6th edition)
Homework Assignment for students: Bring in a photo of your family with you to class
Brainstorming (SPEAKING AND WRITING)
Class will begin with a general introduction to the chapter and of the theme of family. The teacher will
discuss the schemata of the family unit and briefly introduce some of the basic vocabulary of family members
at this time. Students will then be asked to spend a few minutes writing down a list of what defines a family
in their own words (this will be turned in to the teacher for her to review). Is it just your immediate family
(parents, siblings)? Does it include pets? Does it include friends? Does it include extended family? The
teacher will present these questions with the assumption that students have already been exposed to some
of the vocabulary from completing the homework in MySpanishLab (supplemental online based platform that
accompanies Mosaicos textbook) from the night before. After a few minutes of writing, students will then be
asked to work in pairs to complete a simple family tree handout with the help from their books (PAGE 2).
This will help them to review the specific vocabulary regarding the names of the family hierarchy and prepare
them to listen to the first recording.

Audio Recording (LISTENING / READING)
Students will then listen to a recording from page 140 in their book on My Spanish Lab entitled "Pablo habla
de su familia" (PAGE 3). Students will be able to read along in the book. The highlighted words and concepts
will be discussed in the class to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

Video Viewing (LISTENING)
After, the teacher will introduce a video of children who are describing some members of their family (prelistening phase) and will ask students to pay special attention to the members of the family who are
mentioned and the adjectives that the children in the video use to describe them (parsing phase) (PAGE 4).

Follow-up Activity (SPEAKING)
After watching the video, the teacher will ask students to take a few minutes to prepare a few words to say
about the photos that they brought in of their family members. The class will then be concluded with each
student presenting a few sentences using their family photos to introduce their family members to us and
share a little bit about the importance of family. Students will then be encouraged to form at least one
question to ask their fellow students while they are presenting information about their families in order to
encourage interpersonal communication.

Me llamo Pablo Méndez Sánchez y vivo con mis padres, mi hermana y mis abuelos en un
apartamento en Bogotá, la capital de Colombia.
Mi madre tiene un hermano, mi tío Jorge. Su esposa es mi tía María. Tienen tres hijos y viven
también en Bogotá. Mi primo Jorgito es el menor. Mis primas Elenita y Ana son gemelas. Mis
primos son muy simpáticos y pasamos mucho tiempo juntos.
Mis tíos tienen solo dos sobrinos en Bogotá, mi hermana Inés y yo. Su otra sobrina, Sofía, vive
en Cartagena, al norte del país. Sofía es la mayor de todos los primos.
La neita favorita de mis abuelos es mi hermanita Inés. Tiene solo tres años y es la menor de
todos su nietos.

Ah, y casi lo olvidé, mi mamá está emabarazada y voy a ser hermano.
Tengo dos casas. Una de mi mamá y otra de mi papá.
Quiero que sea niño, porque las niñas son como "waaaa" (makes the

Mi tata es muy gracioso.
Mi papá trabaja y es un guardia.
