Emergency Room
Description of emergency room
The emergency room provides care for patients for many different types of urgent and
emergency eye problem on a walk in basis. The emergency room offers service 24 hours, 7
days a week at any time .It also serves as a tertiary referral centre for other hospitals and
trauma centre in the area which lack of ophthalmology coverage. Besides that, the
emergency room provides care in emergency situations and code blue. It is staffed by
nurses, residents, fellows and attending physician in ophthalmology. Around 35449 patient’s
visits take place in the emergency room almost every year.
Duties & Responsibilities
 Provide technical nursing skill: administrating medications safely according to the
policies and procedures. Eg: instilling eye drops, administrating IV therapies, blood
transfusion when required, performing visual acuity, performing eye dressing and
patching , Administrating oxygen therapy, Assisting in specimen collection,
monitoring of vital signs, blood glucose performing cannulation, performing ecg for
patient pre admissions and when required, performing catheterization when
required.
 Assisting physicians with patient examinations and specialized procedures for eg:
assisting in giving injection avastin and lucentis, assisting in minor surgeries eg:
corneal gluing, intravitral injection antibiotics, corneal tapping, corneal suturing,
syringing and probing.
 Assisting in medical emergencies and code blue.
 Provide accurate, complete reports on patient care problems to the in-coming shift,
Charge Nurse, Nursing Manager/Nursing Shift Manager and physician .Callobrate
effectively as a multidisciplinary team member.
 Function as a relief Charge Nurse by providing clinical supervision on the unit.
 Admitting, transferring and discharging patients according to the policies and
procedures.
 Function as a preceptor for new employees and staff to the department.
 Participate in staff meetings, in-services and quality management activities.
 Function as a monitor and conduct monthly in-service for clinical skills.
