JOB TITLE:
Research Engineer I
SUMMARY (PRIMARY FUNCTIONS): The Research Engineer assists and participates in biomedical
and pre-clinical research and development projects, experiments, and investigations relevant to the
Company’s product strategy or services, disseminating findings through internal reports.
PHYSICAL GUIDELINES: (This position does not require lifting of more than 55 lbs.)
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT: Primarily, work and interact with the
research and engineering development teams. Also, interact with management, senior staff and rest
of company employees. External interaction takes place with consultants, vendors, suppliers and
health care providers (HCPs).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Support the design and implementation of research and engineering development projects. This may
include, but not be limited to, supporting in vivo (animal) and ex vivo testing.
 Prototyping and documenting new device concepts.
 Operating engineering test equipment (e.g. tensile tester, hand held force gages and inspection
tools).

Assisting in executing research investigations and product evaluations.

Carrying out administrative responsibilities related to managing the bio-laboratory and research
laboratory space to ensure that equipment and supplies are organized and available as needed.

Writing research protocols, maintaining records of tests and documenting results in reports.

Analyzing data from research and monitoring progress of studies.

Participating in establishing product requirements, specifications, schedules and test plans.

Working with systems engineers to ensure overall design functionality.

Assisting in developing and documenting intellectual property, securing rights for novel ideas,
concepts, devices and methods.

Maintaining professional relationships internally and externally with other scientists, researchers,
consultants and HCPs.

Completing projects in a manner consistent with corporate objectives.

Maintaining current knowledge of new principles and theories relevant to biomedical research.

Performing other duties as necessary and assigned by the Principal Scientist and/or managers.
QUALIFICATIONS:



Minimum a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering, or related field is required.
Advanced degree in science or engineering optimal.
3+ years research experience required, research in medical devices preferred.
Knowledge of:

Scientific research methods, pre-clinical work, and basic clinical investigation

Laboratory work including use of biological tissue

Good laboratory practices

Engineering principles

ISO certification and FDA compliance desired

Machines/prototyping/fabrication methods
Skill in:

The operation of basic computer programs and associated systems, including Microsoft Word, Excel,
Outlook, and PowerPoint, statistical programs and database management

Writing, composition, English grammar and proofreading

Implementing routine laboratory investigations and procedures

Biomedical engineering equipment and instrumentation

Working with multiple priorities

Interpersonal interaction and team building

Realistic scheduling and observance of deadlines
Ability to:

