School Improvement Plan 2013-14 Summary
The staff and students at the Boutwell Early Childhood Center achieved their 2013-2014 School Improvement Goals. The staff and students worked
diligently to improve Letter Naming Fluency. The teachers used WIN time to instruct the students and to reinforce letter naming skills. Students’
progress was monitored twice a month if they were significantly below the target and monitored once a month if they were slightly below the target. In
addition, struggling students worked with the part time reading specialist to continue to enhance the student skills. Staff met three times a month to
review the data, plan for instruction, and reflect upon areas of success and areas for improvement. Our Aimsweb Letter Naming Fluency scores went
from 43% of students performing below or well below the Massachusetts Early Literacy Norms as measured by the Aims Web Letter Naming Fluency at
the end of the 2013 school year to 12% of students scoring below or well below the average.
The staff and the students at the Boutwell Early Childhood Center achieved their 2013-2014 School Improvement Goal in regards to math (number
recognition). Teachers used WINN time to reinforce skills and reviewed data at data meetings occurring three times a month. Based on the results of the
newly implemented math assessment 10% of students fell below the target in regards to number recognition.
The staff worked in a collaborative spirit for the 2013-2014 school year. Staff members participated in data team meetings, staff meetings, used
common planning time effectively, and many staff members participated in Math or ELA vertical team meetings.
The building administrators were able to accomplish the goal of effectively implementing the new Educator Evaluation tool. The success of this
implementation was due in part to the training and support of the central office staff.
We were able to meet all of our timelines in regards to our Literacy and Math goals which had an impact on student growth. The timelines in regards to
the Educator Evaluation system were about a week late in all aspects.
School Improvement Plan 2014-15
The Boutwell’s school improvement plan for the 2014-2015 school year is a follow-up to last year’s plan. The current plan is connected to our ongoing
work to increase our Early Literacy performance in Kindergarten. New this year is a focus on preschool assessments and alignment of curriculum with
the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. This is plan has links to the strategic plan in setting high expectations for all learners.
School Improvement Goal #1
Goal Statement: Based on the fact that currently the preschool program does not have a consistent common assessment tool to monitor student
progress, at the end of the 2015-2016 school year the preschool teachers with the support of the Early Childhood Directors will design (year 1) and
implement (year 2) an assessment tool to align with the Common Core standards.

School Improvement Goal #2
Goal Statement: Based on the fact that 29% of kindergarten students scored below (tier 2) or well below (tier 3) the Massachusetts Early Literacy
Norms as measured by Aims web Phoneme Segmentation at the end of the 2014 school year, our goal is that by June of 2015 there will be a 20%
reduction of students that score in the tier 2 or tier 3 range as measured by the Aims web Phoneme Segmentation assessment. We will monitor our
progress towards this goal two times per year.
