SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT FOR STANDARD ENGLISH IV
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Directions: Type the answers to the following four sections according to MLA standards. As well, type the instructions of
each section in bold, and type the answer in an un-bolded font. In order for your summer reading assignment to be
accepted with an on-time grade, you must submit one file, containing the answers for all four questions, to turnitin.com
by 8:00 a.m. of the day of the due date.
I.
Relate aspects of the novel to aspects of another novel (If you can’t think of one, use a movie.). On your
own, outside of class, you must a 1 ½ to 2 page essay. (Be as specific as possible.)
 Example: The mystery of determining who is responsible for the murder of Sir Charles Baskerville is
analogous to To Kill a Mockingbird (TKM). In TKM, the children don’t realize who is leaving gifts for
them in the huge tree in front of the Radley house.
II.
Relate aspects of the novel to your own life and/or world events. On your own, outside of class, you must
write a 1 ½ to 2 page essay. (Be as specific as possible.)
 Example: Sherlock Holmes uses all of his deductive powers to determine who killed Sir Charles
Baskerville. In contrast, all the technology of the modern world has been unable to find the
wreckage of the lost aircraft of Malaysian flight 387. To this day, its location remains a mystery.
III.
Find one quote that provides some insight into the following characters. (Be sure to cite the page number
on which the quotation was found.) After you cite the quotation, identify the insight given. In your
explanation of the character insight, note whether the insight is a result of direct characterization or
indirect characterization. Explain how you know.
o Direct Characterization: The narrator tells the reader what to think: Tom was a good guy.
o Indirect Characterization: The narrator shows the reader what to think. Tom worked two
jobs to support his family. No matter how tired he was, he always made time for his
children.
