RDMRose http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/is/research/projects/rdmrose Activity 5.1.3: Investigating a researcher 3 In sessions 2.4.2 and 4.3 you started your preparations for an interview with a researcher. By now, you should have finished your preparations, i.e. you have identified a researcher, an interview schedule, done some preparatory desk research, and possibly you have also interviewed the person of your choice. The aim is to get a grip on: - the researcher’s research (we want to get inside the head of the researcher) what their concept of ‘data’ is and what they do or don’t do to manage their data. If you are using the RDMRose module for CPD, write up a short report of your findings and discuss it with a colleague. Otherwise, do the activity below. This activity will take approximately 1 hour. Presentations Give a short presentation of around 5 minutes on the findings of your desk research and/or your interview. In your presentation you should address the following points: 1. 2. 3. 4. What is this person’s research about? What do you think their concept of research and data is? What type of data was used? Give an example What were the three main "data management" issues that you identified from your investigation (existing problems, potential issues, good practices)? 5. What specific questions would you like to ask the researcher or did you ask the researcher, and why? In your presentation, preferably use only one presentation slide for each of these points. For each presentation, make notes on: the concept of research, the data used in this research, and any data management issues. This will inform our discussion at the end of this activity. You can use the table below. All presentations will be followed by short Q&A sessions: you are encouraged to ask questions to highlight any areas of interest, emerging patterns, or ask for clarification of any issues that remain unclear. Once everyone has presented their findings, you will hold a plenary discussion. The aim of this discussion is to compare (1) disciplines, (2) concepts of research, (3) concepts of data, and (4) data management issues in order to identify differences and similarities.
