Foundation 2 Respiratory Medicine, CIC
The department
The department of Respiratory Medicine comprises of 3 consultants,
1 registrar and FY2/ FY1 doctors also on team. It is a 23 bedded
ward with NIV. EAU with an average 35 admissions per 24 hours.
The type of work to expect and
learning opportunities
Four consultant ward rounds a week with contribution to acute on
call rota on EAU and supervision of FY1 staff. Delivery of daily
medical care and management of ward patients is the main type of
work expected with close supervision. Expectations of the team are
that the FY2 can: take a history and examine a patient, identify and
act upon problems, prescribe safely and keep accurate medical
records. Good communication with patients, relatives and colleagues
is essential as is professionalism.

Main duties of the placement
Managing inpatients. Clinical assessment of patients and initiation of
initial management. Contributing to multidisciplinary care and
management of patients including interactions with patients, their
family, friends and carers. Undertaking specific practical tasks.
Prioritising care of inpatients, liaising with middle and senior medical
staff and nursing staff and maintaining good medical records.
Prioritising issues to be dealt with by other staff including senior
medical staff. Contributing to discharge planning and ensuring that
appropriate social and medical arrangements are in place for
discharge home or to other institutions and appropriate
arrangements for on-going care. Supervising FY1 and training
medical students. Attend clinics in supernumerary capacity. Attend
investigational sessions. Develop practical skills.

Fri: Consultant ward round AM
Managing NIV patients also in workload.
On call requirements
There is a 1:7 rota for evening shifts and weekends. There is no
night time commitment in this placement

North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in April2001
and encompasses both the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, which
was the first PFI Hospital in the UK, (comprising 444 beds), and the
West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven (which has 425 beds). The
Trust provides a wide range of Clinical support services and most
modern investigational methods are now available on site. The
hospitals primarily provide services for North Cumbrian residents,
but they also offer services to patients in Dumfries and Galloway, the
Borders and parts of Northumberland. Nearly all specialities are
represented; three are sub-regional and several others are supradistrict in nature.
The hospitals provide healthcare for a catchment area of around
