rd

and 4

th

Grade Basketball

1. Possession at the start of the game is decided by coin toss.

2. Quarters are eight (8) minutes each with a running clock that stops only for time-outs, free throws, player injury and substitutions. The clock will stop on out-of-bounds only during the last two (2) minutes of each half or overtime period. A four (4) minute overtime period will be played if tied after regulation. No second overtime will be played during the regular season.

3. All players must play the equivalent of two (2) quarters (half the game) and each player must sit out a minimum of a half quarter unless the team has only 5 players. If a team has 9 players at the game, then two players may have a minimum playing time requirement of one and a half (1.5) quarters or 12 minutes.

4. Substitutions can be made at quarter breaks, at the middle of each quarter and at time-outs.

5. Goal height is nine (9) feet.

6. 27 .5” (#5) size basketball is used for play.

Game Play

Alabama High School rules will govern, except as specifically modified below:

7. Teams may play man-to-man or zone defense. Four (4) defenders must remain inside the 3-point arc. One (1) defender may defend outside the 3point arc, but may not cross the half-court line.

8. Stealing a pass is allowed once the ball crosses the half-court line.

However, no stealing the ball off the dribble is allowed until the offensive player with possession of the ball is inside the 3-point arc.

9. The defense may tie up the ball only when the offensive player with possession of the ball is inside the 3-point arc or when the ball is loose on the floor.

10. Defenders may not double-team the ball or any player outside the lane, but may double-team once the ball enters the lane.

11. Exception to Rules 7-10. During the last two (2) minutes of the 2 nd quarter, the last two (2) minutes of the 4 th quarter, and any overtime period, any number of defensive players may come up to half-court to defend, and double-teams, trapping, and stealing off the dribble or pass is allowed.

12. Controlled fast breaks will be allowed. If in the judgment of the head official on the court there is a lack of control on an attempted fast break, play will be stopped by said official and play will resume with the team in possession of the ball inbounding the ball at half-court.

13. Upon change of possession (such as a defensive rebound, a steal, etc.), all players must run down and set up at the other end of the floor. On a fast break, however, the defense may defend before the ball reaches halfcourt, subject to rules 8-10 above.

14. Team fouls will be called and 1-and-1 free throws will be in effect on the

7 th team foul each half. The 10 th team foul will result in two (2) free throws. Personal fouls will be recorded. Player will foul out of the game on

5 th foul.

15. Each team will have two (2) timeouts each half with no carryover to the second half or overtime. Each team will have one (1) timeout in overtime.
