Job purpose
To provide local, national and international leadership in the delivery of the National Institute for Health
Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) in Wessex, developing further
the international reputation of Wessex in Applied Health Research.
To provide effective academic leadership within the Faculty and wider University, undertaking management,
research and educational activities, including the supervision of PhD students. To make key decisions and
judgements at a strategic level and contribute to the development of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the
University’s external profile in the UK and internationally.
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities

Provide local, national and international leadership in the delivery of the National Institute 30%
for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) in
Wessex, developing further the international reputation of Wessex in Applied Health
Research.

To lead the CLAHRC in its contribution to achieving the NIHR’s and Faculty’s strategic plan
and agreed performance targets. Be accountable to the CLAHRC Wessex Board for the
overall leadership, management and performance of the CLAHRC Wessex plan.

Develop strong strategic relationships and alliances with internal and external partners
(match funders), for mutual benefit in the delivery of the CLAHRC Wessex contract and
wider agenda.

Lead the delivery of World Class Research through high quality outputs and impact. To be
accountable for the management, performance and development of the CLAHRC’s
academic staff, including development, appraisal and performance management

Provide the infrastructure to secure additional grant and external funding to assist with the 5%
development and delivery of the CLAHRC Wessex, to maximise impact and further applied
heath research.
6.
Be responsible for the strategic Allocation of resources, both cash and match funding
within the CLAHRC.

Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post
holder.

Internal and external relationships
Develop and maintain strong relationship with University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust as
Host for the NIHR CLAHRC Wessex Contract.
Develop and maintain productive relationships within our NIHR CLAHRC Wessex Partners.
Develop and maintain relationships with national and international bodies to promote both the Faculty of
Health Sciences and NIHR CLAHRC Wessex.
Develop strong relationship with other Faculty research groups to maintain Faculty cohesiveness and to
encourage cross-group working.
