TALKING POINTS: WHAT’S WRONG WITH COMMON CORE?

FACTS in Response to CC MYTHS.

MYTH: COMMON CORE IS A GOOD IDEA – EVERYONE DESERVES THE SAME EDUCATION AND

WE SHOULD HAVE HIGHER STANDARDS FOR OUR STUDENTS

FACTS:

Common Core does not mandate that every child be given the same education but that every child achieve the same results - you can mandate instruction if you choose but you cannot mandate results

The Common Core Standards were written primarily by businessmen NOT educators the entire national education system has effectively been removed from the education community and turned over to a small but powerful conglomerate of publishing/testing companies

 There is ZERO evidence that the Standards and/or the methods they promote are appropriate or effective as they have never been tested in any educational environment

Every child should be offered the same opportunity but every person has different aptitudes and abilities – they do not all learn the same or have the same talents therefore cannot be mandated to learn the same thing or the same way or achieve the same results

Under the Common Core program, teachers are rated not by how well they teach the material, but by how well their students learn it (which is entirely beyond their control) – mandating how and what children learn is an absolute practical impossibility

 The Common Core program is currently controlled by a very small group of corporate investors and

government policy makers who control what will be assessed and therefore, what will be taught – all social and political content within our education system are now being directed by this very small conglomerate of financial and political power brokers who remain answerable to no one and who are unrestricted in their ability to socially and politically direct every aspect of every child’s education

The education of our children is now little more than a money making proposition fueled by financial and political interests rather than endeavor for educational achievement

MYTH: THE PROBLEM WITH COMMON CORE IS ITS POOR IMPLEMENTATION

FACTS:

Common Core has not been implemented poorly, but PERFECTLY. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do:

-overhaul the national education system

-destroy state sovereignty with regard to education

-eliminate local control and teachers' and parents' voices in their own children's education

MYTH: WE NEED HIGHER EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS

FACTS:

Maybe, maybe not – The Standards and statistics used to justify them DO NOT account for demographics such as poverty and social circumstances

Either way, these are NOT high standards:

-Common Core ELA Standards REDUCE reading and analysis of classic literature which fosters critical thinking

-Common Core Math ends before full geometry - No Trigonometry; No Calculus – Extensive research strongly indicates that college success is tied directly to higher math proficiency; Common Core

Standards are NOT “College Ready” standards

MYTH: COMMON CORE ARE JUST STANDARDS – NOT CURRICULUM - STATES AND TEACHERS

HAVE AUTONOMY

FACTS:

Measure of achievement of Common Core Standards is standardized tests which are subject to

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPROVAL

ASSESSMENTS DRIVE CURRICULUM –In Common Core’s benefactor Bill Gates’ own words: "When

the tests are aligned to the common standards, the curriculum will line up as well—”

The vast majority of states are participating with JUST TWO TESTING CONSORTIA: PARCC and

Smarter Balanced – two huge testing monopolies with:

-Substantial financial interest

-NO Transparency

-NO Accountability

MYTH: 45 STATES HAVE ADOPTED/EMBRACED THE STANDARDS

FACTS:

Common Core was implemented in absolute STEALTH almost 4 full years ago and only in the past 10 months have people even heard what it is

 Most states committed to adopting the Standards and the binding associated conditions of data collection and teacher rating systems before the Standards were even written in exchange for Race to the Top funding – It was a FUNDING BRIBE , NOT a decision based on true education reform

Many of the states which originally “embraced” the Standards (or rather the funding) are now finding out what they’ve gotten themselves into and are working to remove themselves from participating in the national Common Core program and return state sovereignty and local control of education to their states

MYTH: THE EDUCATION COMMUNITY DEVELOPED AND SUPPORT THE STANDARDS

FACTS:

The Standards were developed, copyrighted and implemented by corporate financial interests and

private trade organizations including: Achieve Inc., National Governors’ Association (“NGA”) and the

Council for Chief State School Officers (“CCSSO”)

 The education community was and continues to be almost entirely excluded from the development and consideration of the Common Core program

The panel that created the early childhood (grades K – 3) standards had 135 members. NOT ONE OF

THEM WAS AN EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER OR PROFESSIONAL.

 At the high school level, the panel that created the “College and Career Ready Standards” in English and Mathematics DID NOT INCLUDE ONE SINGLE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER OR FRESHMAN YEAR

COLLEGE PROFESSOR.

 Dr. Sandra Stotsky, the nation’s leading ELA specialist, and Dr. James Milgram, the only mathematician on the Common Core Validation Committee, are two of five Validation Committee Members (of a total committee of 29 members) who refused to sign the validation statement because they do NOT support the Standards or the program and could not substantiate the Validation Statement claim that the Standards were “research based and internationally benchmarked” – their dissention was not mentioned in the final report

500 early childhood educational professionals wrote, signed and hand delivered to the Common Core development team a letter detailing strong concerns and opposition to the Standards - The letter was ignored

MYTH: REFUSING THE TESTS

FACTS:

The standardized tests were designed and legislated as a mechanism to rate teachers – NOT

STUDENTS. Our children are being used by the state. Children are being forced to sit for tests

(including field testing which is the testing company using our children to sample their test questions)

 for the purpose of the state rating teacher performance. Adults who participate in rating practices and field testing are ASKED and PAID to participate. But the state and the testing company monopolies are forcing our children into service. TELL THEM NO. Tell them that they may NOT USE

YOUR CHILDREN.

When parents tell the schools that they will not allow their children to be used, many are being told that the MINOR student must “refuse the test themselves”. This is a violation of parents’ rights and

responsibilities for their own minor children. Challenge the state that they do not have authority to usurp parental rights to speak on behalf of their own MINOR children. Do not allow the government to bully you into abdicating your right to protect your own children.
