Position Description
The position of Pack Leader (PL) helps new students and their families/guests make a positive transition to A-State
during New Student Registration from April 2016 – August 2016. PLs are responsible for the planning, facilitation,
and implementation of all aspects of the Camp A-State program throughout the 2016 summer months. In addition
to improving self-confidence, communication skills, and leadership abilities, PLs are some of the best informed
students who become part of a close-knit, diverse, and dynamic group. While the PL position is a very rewarding
leadership experience, PLs work long hours for little monetary compensation and are expected to maintain high
and positive standards at all times.



















Duties and Responsibilities
Act as a positive representative of A-State
Welcome new students and guests to A-State
Teach new students A-State History & Traditions
Explain academic opportunities, responsibilities, and procedures
Lead campus tours throughout the summer and highlight various aspects of campus life and services
Serve as a point of contact for students throughout the summer
Explain on-line procedures to students such as the schedule of classes, course availability, registration, etc.
Plan, facilitate, and implement all aspects of the Camp A-State overnight extended Orientation program
throughout the summer
Assist with all aspects of New Student Registration sessions, including but not limited to: creating
participant folders, greeting guests, check-in during program days, lifting boxes, transporting materials
around campus, moving chairs and tables, etc.
Characteristics of Pack Leaders
Display strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills and the potential to develop these skills
Have a positive attitude, enthusiasm, & passion for A-State
Willingness to work with a diverse group of people and emphasize the importance of first year campus,
academic, and/or community co-curricular involvement
Desire to take initiative, motivate/help others, have strong sense of responsibility, and have fun
Adhere to a strong code of ethics at all times
Exhibit leadership potential & willingness to develop leadership skills further
Demonstrate punctuality and professionalism
Qualifications and Requirements of Pack Leaders
Have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA as a continuing A-State student (including transfer work), and MUST
maintain a 2.75 or higher GPA throughout your employment through August 2016.
Have completed 25 credit hours by May 2016 and be enrolled in at least 12 credits for Spring 2016.
Must have a minimum of one semester of school left upon the completion of the 2016 New Student
Registration season.

Qualifications and Requirements of Pack Leaders (continued)
Must remain in good academic and judicial standing with the University throughout the tenure in the
position, not violate the Student Code of Conduct, and conduct yourself in an appropriate manner both in
person and electronically via the Internet (email, Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Instagram, etc).
Will not take any Pre-Session or Summer courses that interfere with trainings, Registrations, Camp A-State,
etc.
Attend the Leadership Course for Pack Leaders, UC 3012, a 2-credit course held every Monday from
3:00p – 5:00p during the Spring 2016 semester. PLs must receive an A/B in order to continue on during
the summer. Student must be able to attend entire class in order to be considered for selection. Selected
PLs will be given instructions on how to register for this course as it is a private course that individuals are
not permitted to register without special permission.
Participate and attend all aspects of scheduled training meetings and retreats including but not limited to:
PL Retreat Weekend, Work Weekend, PL Class.
Participate and attend all New Student Registration sessions, and all Camp A-State sessions.
PLs must maintain high standards of ethical behavior and professionalism regarding new students and
parents. PLs are not allowed to engage in any form of romantic relationship with any incoming student
from April 2016 – August 2016.
A PL must make a commitment to the program and provide a positive experience for new students, family
members, and guests. The work hours during each program are long and involved, and PLs are required to
be at each program from the beginning to end and maintain a positive attitude.
If you work another job, all dates related to New Student Registrations, Camp A-State, retreats, work
weekends, training dates must come first. Other employment will not be an excuse to miss any New
Student Registration meetings.
Consumption of alcohol twenty-four hours prior to a session or while on the job is not permitted.
Absolutely no drug use will be tolerated at any time.
Salary & Benefits
While the New Student Registration experience is an extremely rewarding leadership opportunity, it is not
a position you should seek out for money. All payment information will be finalized and provided in the
Pack Leader contract provided in January.
T-shirts PLs are required to wear during New Student Registration & Camp A-State are provided.
PLs are required to wear khaki, black, or red bottoms, which are not provided, and must be approved.
Meals during New Student Registration & Camp A-State will be provided.
Develop leadership, interpersonal communication, and social skills.
Contact with A-State administrators, faculty, staff, and other students.
Gain significant leadership experience while enhancing your opportunities for campus involvement,
employment marketability, and career opportunities.
It is important to understand that housing during the summer will not be provided outside of the Camp AState dates. Please note if you are not able to make arrangements the night prior to New Student
Registration to stay in or around Jonesboro for the NSR dates, you may want to consider not applying for
this position.

Required Dates - *All Dates are subject to change*
Class: Held every Monday during the Spring 2016 semester from 3:00pm – 5:00pm. All class meetings are
mandatory. If you are not able to fit this class into your course schedule, you unfortunately will not be able to be
considered for selection. This means that you arrive to class no later than 3:00p and are prepared to stay until
5:00p.
Required Pack Leader Date Commitments (all dates will be finalized in January):
March 29, March 30, April 25, May 11, June 6, June 13, June 20, June 27, August 2, August 8, and August 9
Retreat Date to be scheduled for two days in May, and you will be notified at the start of the semester exact dates.
Potential Camp A-State dates (will select one date): August 3 & 4 or August 10 & 11
*Additional dates include May Retreat Weekend, Work Weekend, and monthly meetings during the summer.
All of these dates are mandatory and will be provided during the start of the Spring semester in the Pack
Leader Contract.

 Paper Application – Completed application, resume, and references, must be turned in no later than 4:00
pm on Tuesday, November 10, 2015.

 Resume – that includes your current and previous campus organizations, leadership
positions, and employment (freshmen only may include High School activities)
 References –Both reference forms must be submitted to the Leadership Center no later than
4:00pm on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. It is your responsibility to ensure these letters
reach the Leadership Center prior to the application deadline.
 References should be given to someone who can comment on your leadership or
work skills and experience.
 One reference must be completed by a full-time professional faculty or staff
member at Arkansas State University.
 References cannot be completed by any undergraduate students, graduate students
(Residence Assistant, Hall Director, Organization President, etc.), or Leadership
Center staff members, and should not be completed by anyone that has any form of
family tie to you directly.
 Individual Interviews – All individuals will be notified if they are invited to participate in an individual
interview by Wednesday, November 11, 2015, via their A-State student email account.
o Individuals invited to participate in an individual interview will need to sign up for individual
interview by 4:00pm on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, in the Leadership Center, Suite 2067, 2nd
floor of the Reng Student Union. Failure to sign up by 3:00pm will void the application.
o The individual interviews will be ten to fifteen minutes in length on Thursday, November 12, 2015.
o Individuals invited to participate in the interview should wear appropriate interview attire.
 Hiring – Applicants will be informed of their status via their A-State email on or before Friday, November
20, 2015.
