Unit 2: The First Humans Vocabulary
1. economic -
how a group or individual makes money and how they manage that money.
2. Stone Age -
a period of time during which early humans made lasting tools and weapons
mainly from stone; the earliest known period of human culture.
3. Neolithic Age-
the latest part of the Stone Age. Also known as the New Stone Age
4. Paleolithic Age -
the second part of the Stone Age beginning about 700,000 BCE and lasting to
about 500,000 BCE. Also known as the Old Stone Age.
5. artifacts-
a man-made object that has cultural importance
6. archeologist-
a scientist who examines objects to learn about the human past
7. migration -
to move from one place to another
8. agriculture-
the practice of farming
9. domesticate-
to adapt wild plants for human use; tame wild animals and breed them for
human use.
10. nomad -
a person who has no settled home
11. semi-sedentary - a society where people stay in one place for a small period of time to grow crops,
but also leave to hunt and follow the herds. (Hunting/ Gathering societies)
12. sedentary -
people stay one place all year round
13. irrigation-
supplying land with water through a network of canals
14. surplus -
having more than one needs
15. civilization -
a society with cities, a central government, job specialization, and social classes
16. oral traditions -
stories passed down by word of mouth
