for Deputy Head teacher (Bilingual stream) at Wix Primary
Job Description
The role of the Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) is complex and demanding. It requires good
communication and personal skills and also the ability to understand data, work under pressure and
problem solve. Given the unusual, but very exciting bilingual structure at Wix we need a deputy who is
open to and willing to learn from other educational cultures.
The Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will assist the Headteacher in the core tasks of leadership,
management, organisation and the on-going development of the school according to its needs.
In addition to the duties and responsibilities as described in the Teachers Pay and Conditions of
Employment, the Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will carry out the responsibilities outlined below:
Leading and managing the staff
Working with The Headteacher, The Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will lead, motivate, support,
challenge and develop staff to secure improvement.
The Deputy Headteacher will:












Support the Headteacher to ensure that professional duties are fulfilled as specified in the Terms
and Conditions of Service for Teachers.
Undertake the professional duties of Headteacher in the Head's and Deputy Headteacher’s (Classic
stream) absence in line with agreed school policies.
Ensure that there is effective liaison between the Headteacher, SMT and staff so that
professional teamwork and motivation is maintained; resolving where possible, but also drawing
to the attention of the Head any staff difficulties or problems.
Actively participate in regular SMT meetings; organise and chair Bilingual stream meetings where
required.
Share management of support staff, ensuring their effective deployment within the Bilingual
stream classes and maximising their effectiveness in supporting the learning, discipline and
pastoral care of pupils in cooperation with the Deputy Headteacher (Classic stream) and the
school SENCO.
Play a significant role in helping to organise major public school events, with a particular focus
on those relating to the Bilingual stream classes.
Act with other SMT members to provide guidance and support to all staff where necessary, but
Bilingual steam staff in particular, assisting them in their personal development.
Contribute to the implementation of effective systems for the management of all staff
performance.
Contribute to the performance management of Wix teaching staff with a focus on Bilingual stream
staff in accordance with school performance management policy.
Plan, allocate, support and evaluate the work undertaken by Bilingual stream staff
Lead on any disciplinary issues (with regard to Bilingual stream staff) that may arise following the
schools performance management policy; supporting the Headteacher with any general
disciplinary matters.
Support and assist the SENCO with any issues or concerns regarding behavioural or educational
needs, including safeguarding ensuring that the correct external agencies are consulted.

Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources
 Manage of Bilingual stream staff, including allocating, planning and supporting their work. .
 Oversee the Bilingual stream teaching timetable, including the supervision of how the extended
PPA time is used.
 Assist in the recruitment of Bilingual stream staff
 Monitor the use of Bilingual stream resources and make suggestions for new expenditure.
 Teach in the bilingual stream if required.
 Organise and take the lead in planning the school-based INSET, by keeping abreast of current
educational thinking, issues and practice including bilingual staff training.
Strategic direction
The Deputy Head teacher (Bilingual stream) will work with the Headteacher and DH (Classic stream) and
Governing Body to develop the strategic vision for the school.
The Deputy Head teacher (Bilingual stream) will:








Participate in shaping the future of the school by taking an active part in the development of a
long term strategy for Wix, promoting innovation and change as necessary.
Contribute to the development of accurate, updated systems of school self-evaluation
Contribute to the creation and implementation of the School Development Plan (SDP)
Communicate effectively the long, medium and short term objectives of the SDP to the staff,
particularly Bilingual stream staff.
Contribute to the creation and implementation of effective organisational and administrative
systems which support the aims of the school.
In conjunction with the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher (Classic stream) determine,
monitor, evaluate and review school policies and practices taking account of national, local and
school data and inspection and research findings.
Act as an advocate for the Bilingual stream, and other means of harmonising and deepening our
relationship with the École de Wix and the French Inspectorate.
Attend combined management meetings with the Headteacher and Lycée/Cultural embassy staff
as appropriate and be involved with any negotiations regarding staffing, curriculum or finance.
Working with strategic partners and the community
 Foster harmonious relations with Wix and Lycée staff, parents and governors.
 Seek out people and organisations that are able to support the school in achieving its strategic
objectives.
Accountability
The Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will support the Headteacher to account for the efficiency and
effectiveness of the school to Governors and others, including parents, staff and the local community.
The Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will do the following with specific regard to the Bilingual
stream :


Provide information, objective advice and support to the governing body to enable it to meet its
responsibilities for securing effective teaching and learning and improve standards of achievement
and for achieving efficiency and value for money.
Contribute to the creating and development of an organisation in which all staff recognise that
they are accountable for the success of the school.

Contribute to the presentation of regular reports on the school’s performance to Governors, LEA,
local community, OFSTED.
Contribute to the establishment and monitoring of systems that keep parents well informed about
the curriculum, children’s achievements and progress and encourages parents and other family
members to make a contribution to achieving challenging targets for their children.
Help present information about our progress and development to our strategic partners.
Teaching and Learning
The Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will work with the Headteacher and DH (Classic stream) to
create and maintain an environment that promotes and secures good teaching, effective learning, high
standards of achievement and progress and good behaviour and discipline.
The Deputy Headteacher (Bilingual stream) will:









Assist in developing an overall School Development Plan based on strategic objectives and from
information gained through systematic monitoring, observation, discussion, consultation with
stakeholders and data analysis.
Assume lead responsibility for the statistical analysis and tracking of pupils’ progress within the
Bilingual stream following the assessment cycle and using a range of resources.
Work with the HT to recommend and implement strategies to drive improvement in pupils’
progress in the Bilingual stream
Lead on evaluating the overall effectiveness of the Bilingual curriculum and assist in evaluating the
progress of other initiatives, projects and subjects.
Work closely with the Headteacher, Lycée coordinator and Bilingual staff members to facilitate the
production of combined medium and long term curriculum plans.
Work with the Deputy Headteacher (Classic stream) and special needs coordinator to track pupil
standards and progress, identifying early on cases where extra support is needed.
Demonstrate proven ability as a class teacher and be a strong role model.
Assure the good conduct, discipline and well-being of all children, assisting in and promoting good
order in the school as a caring community.
Oversee the pastoral care and discipline system within the Bilingual stream classes of the school
Certain Deputy headship duties will be shared with the Deputy Headteacher (Classic stream) as follows:
 Assist with the development of the physical environment in internal communal areas, resources
storage, room environment, external play areas
 Work with the Headteacher and the Deputy Head (Classic Stream) on publicity and school
branding with a particular emphasis on whole school pupil recruitment.
 Be proactive in monitoring and improving pupil attendance in cooperation with the School
Learning Mentor and School Business Manager.
 Work with the Deputy Headteacher (Classic stream) to provide opportunities for greater
cooperation between both streams at Wix.

Qualified teacher status; recent substantial and successful experience in Primary Education.
Recent experience of working as part of a SMT and of a post that involves substantial coordination
