WINTER/SPRING 2014
2014 Winter/Spring Class Descriptions
Beginning Spanish (K–2nd grade)
Advanced Spanish (3rd–5th grade)
Viva el Espanol leads Spanish language classes by an experienced
teacher. Classes are specially designed to encourage and support daily
use of the Spanish language. We cover themes that are relevant to your
child's life and learn words and phrases that are easy to remember and
use outside of class. The program uses a full-immersion approach, and
children learn while singing songs, playing games, and doing hands-on
projects. Optional culturally focused field trips and activities offered
throughout the year. Note: These are not an AEF classes.
Engineering FUNdamentals using LEGO® (1st–5th grade)
Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens
of thousands of LEGO®! Apply real-world concepts in physics,
engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such
as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and the Battletrack!
Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a
supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new
and returning students to engineer at the next level.
For more information, please visit: http://vivaelespanol.org/register.php
Chess (K–5th grade)
Chess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily. Studies have found
that chess helps improve test results in reading, science, and math, and
produces growth in critical cognitive skills. Beyond academia, chess
influences social behavior including self esteem, respect for others,
patience, and good manners. And did we mention, it's FUN. Boards and
sets are provided. Classes are one hour in length, with 20 mins of
instruction and 40 mins of play. For more information, please call (510)
843-0150, email info@berkeleychessschool.org, or visit
www.berkeleychessschool.org.

Outer Space Explorers Art - WINTER (1st–5th grade)
Embark on an outer space adventure through awesome art
projects, outdoor rocket launches, meteorite hunts, and a spectacular
hand-bound mission journal to continue the learning at home! Investigate
planets, moons, meteors and comets, galaxies and constellations, the sun
and solar power. Look into the latest on the search for Earth-like
exoplanets, the use of sound waves in understanding the sun's inner
workings, and the mystery of dark matter!
Coordinator: Amy Dunn
Hand Sewing (2nd–5th grade)
Learn the basics of hand sewing. Students will start by making a small
pillow, then advance to making a tote bag, cell phone holder or other small
fabric carrier. They will learn how to attach a strap, finish a hem, add a
pocket, and make a closure. They are guided as to the choice of fabric,
color and pattern combinations.

Sculpture: Passion for Plaster - WINTER (K–5th grade)
Create and explore through sculpture. Students will get their hands dirty
as we build 3D sculptures. They will learn two very different techniques
to create these pieces. We will carve free-form sculptures from wet
plaster as well as building larger scale armatures and plastering them.
Coordinator: Lori Whittock
Musical Theater: Beauty and the Beast (1st–6th grade)
Tomorrow Youth Repertory offers weekly after-school theater
classes for students of all experience levels. Our Spring
production is Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and we will sing,
dance, and act our way through this story every Wednesday.
Every child will be assigned a role in the production. Children
will be responsible for learning their part! At the end of the
season, they will perform the show on stage in front of
friends and family, so that they get to experience the joy and
excitement of a true theater performance complete with
costumes, lights and mics. Note: This is not an AEF class.

Cooking Around The World (1st–5th grade)
New recipes/countries for Winter/Spring sessions!! Cooking
Round the World gives kids the opportunity to learn about
countries around the world by cooking and eating: Moroccan
couscous with fresh ginger, cloves and orange zest; Vietnamese
wontons with water chestnuts, carrots and tofu; Belgian waffles
with banana slices, caramel and chocolate sauce, The program
is completely hands on; everyone peels or chops or dices or
minces, etc. We supply the aprons, food, cookware, and
recipes to take home. Kids acquire a new appreciation of food
and a desire to see the world. We are now a completely nut free
program. There are no nuts in any recipe. In many cases we can
accommodate children with other food sensitivities and allergies
with a 2-week advance notice. See policies about food allergy
accommodations at www.cookingroundtheworld.com.
