University Policy on Academic Integrity: St. Francis Xavier values academic
integrity. Therefore, all students must understand the meaning and consequences
of such academic offences as plagiarism, cheating, tampering, and falsification of
material. Please read the following website:
http://www.sites.stfx.ca/registrars_office/academic_integrity.
There is also a library resource webpage on plagiarism for students’ use. Included
is the definition of plagiarism as well as links to resources that may help you to avoid
plagiarism.
Dates of Examinations: Dates for Christmas and Final Examinations are set by the
Office of the Registrar. Such dates should be available in the next few weeks and
can be found on the Registrar’s Office webpage. Please check the scheduled dates
carefully before making travel arrangements.
Departmental Policy on Missed Tests and Examinations: Make-up tests or
examinations will not be given for missed tests, quizzes. In cases where the test or
examination was missed for medical or other legitimate reason (not travel), the final
cumulative grade will be pro-rated.
Departmental Policy on Late Assignments: Students will be penalized 5% of the
assignment’s worth for each calendar day that an assignment is late. Once 10 days
have passed, a mark of zero will be assigned. Only valid excuses, such as illness or
personal emergency (which must be substantiated), are grounds for a renegotiation
of the due date with the professor.
Policy on laptop and cell phone usage in the classroom:
Students must turn off their cell phones while in class. DO NOT TEXT DURING
CLASS TIME. If you have a legitimate reason for keeping your cell phone on (e.g.,
you have a sick child at home), please indicate this to your professor before class.
Students who wish to use a laptop during class time must seek permission in
advance. If permission is granted, please note that your laptop is to be used only for
note-taking, not recreational purposes (e.g., Facebook, web-surfing). Non-academic
use of laptops distracts your classmates and your professor. Inappropriate use of
laptops in the classroom will result in laptop privileges being revoked.
