Individual or small group check: Have students clap the number of syllables in
their own name or other familiar words and identify the vowels, students can
circle the vowels in words provided and, from that, determine the number of
syllables. Students can also complete word sorts by number of syllables. <PDF>
folder in resources.

Whole Group: During shared reading ask students how many syllables a
selected word has or to find words with a certain number of syllables. For
example, find words that have two syllables.

Writing: After implementing lessons about syllables have students separate
words by syllables by circling the consonants and vowels that belong to each
syllable. Have students check edit their writing, checking that all words have a
vowel for each syllable in the word.

