THE WILLIAM AND OLIVIA ALLAWAY SCHOLARSHIP
2016/2017
Applications are invited to compete for the above-named scholarship which is
awarded annually to enable a Sussex student to spend a year at the University of
California.
The Scholarship was established sixteen years ago thanks to the generosity of
Professor William Allaway, Director Emeritus of the Education Abroad Program of
the University of California, and his wife, Olivia. Professor Allaway was instrumental
in establishing the Sussex-California exchange programme in the 1960s. Since
then, many Sussex students have benefited from spending a year at the University
of California but, prior to the establishment of the William and Olivia Allaway
Scholarship, this opportunity was only available to students on an American Studies
or North American Studies four-year programme.
There is a Scholarship available for one student which is awarded through an annual
essay competition. This year's judges will include Dr Daniel Kane (N.American
Studies Year Abroad Director).
Each Scholarship will provide the following:
1. A stipend of $3,000 (US) for the academic year.
2. A tuition fee waiver at the University of California (you will still need to pay
University of Sussex fees for the year but this will be at a reduced amount).
Please note that you will be responsible for your own return air fare, insurance, rent
and other living expenses and that, in order to be eligible for a visa, you will need to
provide a bank reference and financial guarantees. Costs vary considerably at each
of the University of California campuses and you might want to take this into account
when making your choice of campus. You will, of course, still be eligible for any
usual loan entitlements.
Eligibility Requirements
1. You must be a full-time undergraduate student at the University of Sussex
2. The Scholarship is open to students in any academic discipline except those on a
degree programme which requires a compulsory year abroad (i.e. those excluded
are students on the following programmes: American Studies, major and minors,
language studies and Law, Business and Engineering students)
3. The competition is open to current second years and those in the second year of a
four-year programme (i.e. you cannot be going into your final year in 2016/17)
4. Participation will be subject to you obtaining permission from the Director of
Teaching and Learning for your school of study to vary your degree programme
5. The Scholarship recipient will be expected to have an excellent academic and
personal record and to have a concrete purpose for studying at the University of
California
6. You will be invited to submit your preference of University of California campus but
the final allocation decision will rest with the University of California
Competition Details
To apply for the Scholarship you are required to complete an application form and
submit a one page curriculum vitae summarising your academic and/or work
achievements to date and obtain a reference from your academic advisor, together
with an essay (typed) of not more than 1,500 words on the following topic:
Why the opportunity to study at the University of California would
benefit my degree programme and/or my future career.
University of California catalogues (prospectuses) are available for consultation in
Friston. You will probably need to read these catalogues in order to select your
