EASL policy on funding Horizon 2020 project
applications
Applying for EU research funding is a time-consuming and costly process. EASL
wishes to support high quality research applications submitted by members to
increase EU research funding for liver disease. We have developed these guidelines to
assist you in your application.
What we will fund and how much
EASL will fund stage 2 applications to the Societal Challenges (Health, Demographic
change and Wellbeing) pillar of Horizon 2020. The maximum grant available will be
€10,000.
EASL will issue a letter of support for a stage 1 application if requested, subject to
the membership requirement as well as receipt of the information asked for in 4.2 and
4.3 below and agreement from reviewers on the Governing Board.
1. Requirements
(i) Membership of EASL
Support for Horizon 2020 applications is a benefit of EASL membership, therefore
the main applicant for EASL funding must be a fully paid up member of EASL at the
time of the application and a participant in the full project proposal. In addition 50%
of all investigators involved in the grant application to H2020 must also be EASL
members.
(ii) Notification of success in a stage 1 application
Only requests for funding to support stage 2 applications will be considered.
Therefore, applicants must have received notification from the EU Commission that
they have been successful in their stage 1 application and invited to submit a full
application.
2. What kind of costs will EASL fund?
EASL will fund reasonable costs related to the submission of a full project proposal to
H2020. The maximum sum available will be €10,000.
3. Deadlines
All applications must be submitted in full within 1 month of notification by the EU
Commission of success in phase 1. The applicable date will be the date on which the
email notification was sent by the Commission to the applicant.
4. Documents/information needed
1) Written invitation from the Commission to submit a full stage 2 application
2) Names of the EASL members involved in the project
3) A technical project description of objectives, deliverables, work packages,
institutions and WP leads, basic milestones, project management,
dissemination plans and the overall budget
4) Information on what the EASL financial support will fund e.g. a project
planning meeting, payment to a specialist consultancy etc.
5) Bank account details (name, address of bank and the account holder, IBAN
and BIC Code)
6) The deadline for submission of the full application to the EU Commission
7) Details of any other non-financial support required from EASL e.g. a letter of
support for the project, EASL participation in the project if funded by H2020
e.g. participation in the dissemination work package1 etc.
5. Approval process
All applications will be reviewed by members of the EASL Governing Board. GB
members involved in a project that has been submitted for EASL support will be
excluded from the review process.
If EASL receives more than the number of applications that can be funded, in the
event of a tie on scientific quality, priority will be given to the project(s) involving the
highest numbers of EASL members.
Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their request within two weeks of their
application.
6. Responsibilities of the applicants towards EASL:
(i) Acknowledgement of EASL support in their application to H2020
(ii) Prompt notification of the outcome of the stage 2 application process as soon as
this is available
(iii) Presentation of the project at the ILC upon the request of EASL
(iv) A report on the outcome of the whole project in writing to EASL within 6 months
of its completion
