Philosophy and Ethics is an excellent preparation for a wide range of university courses in the arts,

The Religious Studies department offers an Advanced Subsidiary (AS) course in Year 12 and an Advanced
level (A2) course in Year 13, which can be combined for a full A Level.
Both the AS and the A2 are made of two units which will be Philosophy and Ethics.
PHILOSOPHY:
Is there life after death?
How can there be a God when there is so much evil in the world?
How did the universe get here?
Do miracles occur?
Has science replaced religion?
In Philosophy there are no right and wrong answers. Your ability to present arguments
is what counts.
ETHICS:
Ethics is a branch of Philosophy which deals with what is right and wrong.
Here are some ethical questions….
How do we know what is right and wrong?
Is there a clear way of knowing what is right and wrong?
Is right and wrong just a personal matter?
Is it God that decides what is right and wrong?
Some answers…
Jeremy Bentham (1748 -1832)
These terms mean nothing. What is right is what brings the greatest happiness to the greatest number.
Joseph Fletcher(1905-1991)
What is right is whatever the most loving thing is in any situation.
What do YOU think?
During the course, the ethical theories will be applied to modern ethical issues such as abortion, IVF, cloning,
torture, euthanasia, animal testing, CCTV cameras….
Every day, YOU make ethical choices whether you like it or not.
This course will help to find out more about how you and others do this.
