Application Summary Sheet
Name of Organization: Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, Inc.
Type of Organization: non profit
Location: Westerly, RI however the work can be done from anywhere and meetings can be held online and on the phone and using the
ASANA project management software that we use to coordinate our events and projects. We will meet on campus for face to face
meetings if that’s helpful
Project Timing: Within your timeline.
Project Title: Branding and website for Literacy Volunteers of Washington County – this can be one or two projects based on what
student interest you have.
Project Synopsis: We have a very basic website that was developed using Verizon software, but when we moved to a more reliable and
faster service provider, we could move the shell of the site over to bluehost.com but it’s nearly impossible to update and we are in
need of a complete overhaul. At the same time we have no logo, letterhead, font, promotional materials, design format, etc. so it
would be great to combine these projects. Tangible Outcome/Deliverables would include:
1.
2.
3.
Design Standard Style Manual
A Logo
A Website

b. Informative for each constituent

e. Provides a robust compilation of website links for tutors to use when designing lessons for adult learners
f. Is user friendly
g. Easy to update
Designated Support from Staff/Volunteers: Yes. We’ll meet with the students to tell them about the organization, encourage them to
talk with our constituents, assist them with our board in creating a logo and design standard manual, and work with education students
to create a comprehensive list of websites that would be helpful to our adult learners and tutors. We also have a volunteer who is a
software engineer and web designer but doesn’t have time to do this but he’s here to help. We also have another volunteer who is an
IT consultant who will help answer questions and Washington Trust Company IT staff have offered to volunteer with answering any
questions.
Does this Project have Funding? No
How will this Project Benefit the Organization? Our website is one of our main sources for participant and tutor recruitment, a
resource for tutor training (we link to ProLiteracy for online training), a resource center for adult learners, an avenue for promoting our
fundraising events, a way for tutors who work off campus to log their hours and it needs to be a better resource for accepting
donations and selling fundraising event tickets and sales management. A new website will allow us to recruit tutors and meet the
learning needs of our participants – for many of them that means access to our services helps move them and their children away from
poverty. Our target population is usually close to or below the poverty level.
Why are you Seeking the CPC’s Help? We’re a small non profit running a small deficit for the past two years. We have no money to pay
for web development and yet, it’s crucial for our organization. When we get funding in the primary need is for textbooks and computer
software and hardware to assist our learners. We have been searching for help with this since March 2012.
Possible Participating RWU Disciplines: We would be happy to support the work of Education, Communication, Marketing, and Public
Relations as well as Visual Arts and Digital Media.
