DNA & RNA 3D Model
Objective: Build scientifically accurate models of DNA and RNA molecules. Use your book,
notes, and any other resources as background information. This will count as extra credit
towards your semester grade. Your model needs to be able to hang from the ceiling and may
not include any food that will spoil. The more professional and attractive/sturdy your project,
the more points you may earn. The maximum extra credit you may receive is 50 points. Because
this is EXTRA credit, you may not earn any points if your project is poorly constructed or
thrown together, you must put in the extra effort to gain credit!
The following is a rubric for grading (pass in with project)
DNA Portion:
1. Project is scientifically accurate based on key and overall structure:
a. The correct bases are connected:
_____/0
b. Phosphates and sugars are alternating correctly:
_____/0
c. Everything is attached where it is supposed to be:
_____/0
d. Model is 3 dimensional:
_____/0
e. Model is in the form of a double helix (physically twisted):
_____/0
2. Model contains at least 12 base pairs:
_____/0
3. Deoxyribose sugars and phosphate groups are represented with different colors and/or
structures:
_____ /0
4. All 4 nitrogen bases are represented by different colors and/or structures:
_____ /0
5. Hydrogen bonds are represented clearly:
_____ /0
RNA Portion:
6. Project is scientifically accurate based on key and overall structure:
a. 3 dimensional:
_____/0
b. Phosphates and sugars are alternating correctly:
_____/0
c. Correct bases shown:
_____/0
d. Everything is attached where it is supposed to be:
_____/0
e. Corresponds to one half of your DNA model:
_____/0
7. A CLEAR key is provided for all components (neat and easy to follow):
_____ /0
Total Points earned = ____/0
