Prospective Extra Coaches,
Thank you for your interest in coaching an Extra Team. Coaching an EXTRA team is a one-year commitment
starting on Aug 1st.
With respect to the process, our deadline is March 15 to submit your Extra Coach Application.
Verbal applications will not be recognized. You must allow the committee time to review all the
applications. Please do not assume that you can become an Extra coach simply by default if no one else
submits an application. Until you are formally approved and selected, you do not have an Extra team on which
to offer anyone (players or Asst Coaches) a position. Teams will only be formed if a qualified coach is
approved by the Board for the division, and then only if a competitive team can be formed based on the
skill level of the players that tryout and commit to the team.
Assistant Coaches will be screened and selected from the Head Coach applications. They will need to meet the
same standards, and follow the same guidelines as the Head Coach to qualify. Applicants not initially offered an
Extra team will receive first consideration for Assistant Coaching positions in the same division.
Coaches cannot engage in any direct scouting with potential players. Unlike Select, we will be conducting open
assessments. Players must tryout to play and represent Region 14 on the EXTRA team.

quickly as possible and notify all applicants of its decision.
COACH ELIGIBILITY
Coaches participating in EXTRA should be of excellent quality. At a minimum, EXTRA coaches (head or
assistant) must:
 Have a current Volunteer Application on file at the National Support & Training Center;

Be an AYSO trained and certified coach as specified in these Guidelines;

Be Safe Haven certified;

Be an active participant in the Region’s standard primary program as an instructor, coach or Referee
mentor, or other volunteer service the Region determines adequate to fulfill this requirement;

Be in good standing with the Region, Area and/or Section and AYSO;

Be approved by the Region board; and

Be evaluated and renewed each membership year.
Coaches desiring to coach must have completed age specific training/certification levels as listed below:
U-10 and U-12—U-12 Coach
U-14—Intermediate Coach
It is strongly recommended that EXTRA program coaches be certified at least one level above the level they
intend to coach (except as set forth above, U-10 coaches must be certified at the U-12 level). It is also strongly
recommended that coaches have continuing education each year as designed by the Region. Those wanting to
coach must fill in an application and submit it for approval.
