Approved Social Science and Humanities Electives 2015

Approved Social Science and Humanities Electives
2015-2016 Catalog
Requirements
Students in the civil engineering (CE) program must take at least 12 credits of social
sciences and humanities (SSH) electives satisfying the following requirements:
At least 3 credits must come from the University’s list of International Perspectives (IP)
courses.
At least 3 credits must come from the University’s list of U.S. Diversity (USD) courses.
The remaining courses must come from the IP courses, USD courses, or the other approved
courses below.
At least 6 credits must be at the 200 level or above.
The total must be at least 12 credits even if either the IP or USD requirement is waived.
Rationale
The SSH requirement aims to give CE students an opportunity to broaden their
perspectives beyond what the math, science, and engineering courses can provide. For
example, ABET, the organization that accredits engineering programs, requires that
students have “the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering
solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context”. The CE program
believes that students with such a broad education will be better engineers.
Other approved courses
Be sure to check the 2015-2016 Catalog for prerequisites.
