CERTIFIED IRISH ANGUS BEEF SCHOOL COMPETITION
Due the phenomenal success of this competition in 2014, the Irish Angus Producer Group, along with its
processor partners, ABP Food Group and Kepak Group, are delighted to announce the launch of the 2015
Certified Irish Angus Beef School Competition.
How Does it Work?
Groups of current Transition Year students are invited to make an initial application by way of a 200-word
essay outlining their understanding of Certified Irish Angus Beef. This essay should demonstrate the students’
enthusiasm to become involved, coupled with some general knowledge of Certified Irish Angus Beef.
From this initial application, a number of groups will be selected to go forward to the next stage which will
involve an interview and a short presentation on their initial application. From this process, four successful
groups will be chosen as finalists. These four groups will receive five 6-month old Irish Angus cross calves each
at the National Ploughing Championships in September 2015. The calves will then be reared through the full
production system and slaughtered at less than 24 months of age in either ABP or Kepak meat plants. This
production cycle will coincide with the students’ Agricultural Science studies for Leaving Certificate 2017.
In early 2017, each of the four groups will be assessed on the basis of their understanding of the production of
Certified Irish Angus Beef. One of the four groups will be deemed overall winner and will come away with an
additional prize of €2,000.
Urban Schools
This year, there will be an increased focus on finding finalists from urban schools. The organisers have
developed the competition to encourage more urban schools to take part. This gives students an opportunity
to gain first hand experience of Beef farming, agri business and the development of the Certified Irish Angus
Beef brand. This practical experience will be of substantial benefit to the students in their Agricultural Science
studies and/or Business studies for their Leaving Certificate. It will also offer an opportunity for both rural and
urban youngsters to gain an understanding of what makes Certified Irish Angus Beef a unique and special
eating experience.
The organisers have arranged farms throughout the country to rear the calves on behalf of successful finalists if
those schools do not have facilities to do so. These farms will allow students full access to their calves and
allow them to benefit financially from the performance of the calves.
