Meeting Minutes

Mission Statement:

Muskegon Community College is committed to being a leader in sustainability and is a resource for the community. Using a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional approach, MCC endeavors to meet the needs of the present without compromising the future by operating within a sustainable environmental, social, and economic framework.

Thermal/Solar Water Heater

Jeff Stipes discussed a Thermal/Solar Water Heater project he has been working on that will give students the opportunity to install and utilize equipment of the sort. This water heater has an electric backup giving students a real world example to experience.

Recycling Containers:

Leslee Rohs found recycling containers through recyclingbin.com and stressed the need for support and feedback from custodial services.

Jeff Stipes suggested using multiple manufacturers to fulfill our obligation for education by performing an assessment of the various pros and cons of each type.

Renae Hesselink mentioned grants for K-12 schools for funding recycling/educational programs like these.

Deb Howell suggested placing recycling in centralized offices.

Dan Rinsema-Sybenga brought up the shared recycling station in his office and is concerned that the lack of training on how and when to recycle may have lowered the use of the station.

Suggested Changes for Recycling Containers:

Placing a paper recycling bin by each printer

Training during employee seminar days

Instructions in the Employee Handbook

Removing garbage and replacing with recycling trays

Taking suggestions from faculty, staff and students

Educating during Tech Talk

Identification of the backgrounds of students needed, as well as what training may be needed by the students to perform the job functions.
