Transition
Cadre & Summer Institute
Background Information
In 2000, a Transition Cadre was incepted and comprised of transition specialists and
other professionals supporting post-secondary transition for students with disabilities in
the state of New Mexico. The Cadre model was the first of its kind in the nation and
later used as a model by other states for developing their own systems. A Summer
Institute was also introduced as a conference, to further support transition outcomes.
The last Cadre and Summer Institute were held in 2010.
The Special Education Bureau (SEB) is proud to announce the reinstitutionalization of
these two important technical supports and professional development systems for the
2015-2016 School Year. The SEB will collaborate with the National Technical Assistance
Center on Transition to provide technial support for the Cadre and Summer Instute. This
collaboration will ensure participatnts receive transition best practices and the most
current and accurate information avaliable.
Goals

Keep transition specialists and other special education personnel abreast of
Federal and State Rules and Regulations related to transition, including
information regarding the Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA);

Share information on research-based best practices in improving student
outcomes, student-focused planning, family involvement; interagency
collaboration and program support structures;

Develop and implement annual plans for
programming and for program improvement;

Create networking
representatives;

Create a course requirement model to be implemented by the Public Education
Department (PED) and utilized by LEAs for the Career Graduation Option.
