11. Aims of the Programme



To provide an academic introduction to the role of emotional intelligence and effective
communication in business and leadership.
To provide a coaching opportunity for leaders and future leaders in the community, politics,
public policy and business.
To develop an understanding of how emotions can be used to manage social and business
situations, reduce potential conflict, and promote productivity and personal growth.

12. Learning Outcomes, Teaching, Learning and Assessment Methods
A. Knowledge and Understanding
A1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theories of emotional intelligence and
communication and how they are associated with individual and group success.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lectures will be used to introduce students to the historical and theoretical roots of emotional
intelligence as a subject of academic interest. Theories of effective communication are considered
within this context. The lectures will be reasonably interactive and are aimed at raising students’
awareness of the importance of emotional intelligence for leaders.
B. Subject-specific skills
B1. Evaluate their own Emotional Intelligence skills.
B2. Recognise and identify emotions in faces, body language, and tone of voice and how this can
impact on their performance.
B5. Effectively manage own and others emotions.
B3. Practise active listening and focussing skills during group and individual interactions.
B4. Communicate clearly and persuasively
Teaching and Learning Methods
Subject specific skills will be taught in interactive workshops. In workshops, students will complete
self-assessment exercises and through experiential learning, develop their own emotional
intelligence skills. Activities include watching prepared media and reading documents to discuss
and critically analyse behaviour and outcome, and role-play to demonstrate effective listening
skills. Activities are designed to help students develop the abilities to (1) Recognise and identify
emotion in faces, body language and tone of voices, (2) speak effectively individually and as part
of a group (3) manage their own emotion and that of others more effectively, and (4) how
motivated the interaction partners are.

PDP will be student led. Students are most likely to undertake the course as a form of personal
development in itself, but links to various resources will be provided for students to enable them to
recognise the role of PDP in their learning and encourage them to participate in this throughout the
course.
16. Admissions criteria
Programme Specifications include minimum entry requirements, including academic qualifications,
together with appropriate experience and skills required for entry to study. These criteria may be
expressed as a range rather than a specific grade. Amendments to entry requirements may have
