iCONE Seminar
Candidate Series
“Controlling Plasmonic Nanomaterials with Light and Vice Versa”
Speaker:
Date:
Location:
Dr. Zijie Yan, Postdoctoral Scholar, James Franck Institute, University of Chicago
Monday, March 9, 2015 at 9:30 AM / Open Discussion begins at 10:30 AM
Grigg, 132
Dr. Zijie Yan is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago. His research
interests lie at the interface of nanoscience and photonics, especially for manipulation and fabrication of
nanostructures using lasers. Dr. Yan received his PhD in Materials Engineering in 2011 from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, where he studied pulsed laser ablation of solid targets in liquid environments and
discovered an innovative ablation mechanism. He started a new area of research for his postdoctoral studies
at the University of Chicago, focusing on design and implementation of structured optical fields for optical
control and manipulation of plasmonic nanostructures. He solved many issues on optical trapping of silver and
gold nanowires and clarified the principles of laser interaction with plasmonic nanostructures in optical traps.
Currently he is exploring the underdeveloped realm of optical matter at the nanoscale, aiming to reveal the
control mechanisms of multiple nanoparticles and create large-scale photonic clusters for specific
applications.

Scientist at Danfoss A/S, DK. In 2000 he became Associate Professor and 2004-2012 Full Professor in
Mathematical Modelling at the Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark. Morten Willatzen's
research interests include solid state physics, mathematical physics, metamaterials and flow acoustics.

The Department of Languages and Cultural Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences will hold
a cross-cultural undergraduate student conference on Japanese-American relations from 10:00 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, in the Cone University Center.
The conference is designed to promote deeper, mutual understanding between the people of
Japan and the United States and help young people to widen their perspectives regarding their roles
in a global environment and enhance their international understanding of Japanese-American
relations. Another aim is to increase exchanges between U.S. universities and those in Japan.
The conference is sponsored by the Japan Foundation, the Laurasian Institution, and the Department
of Languages and Cultural Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

The Milagro Beanfield War
Date:
March 24, 2015 - 5:00pm - 8:00pm
Location:
Student Union Theater
Contact:
Office of International Programs at international@uncc.edu
About the film: In Milagro, a small town in the American Southwest, Ladd Devine plans to build a major new
resort development. While activist Ruby Archuleta and lawyer/newspaper editor Charlie Bloom realize that this
will result in the eventual displacement of the local Hispanic farmers, they cannot arouse much opposition
because of the short term opportunities offered by construction jobs. But when Joe Mondragon illegally diverts
water to irrigate his bean field, the local people support him because of their resentment of water use laws that
favor the rich like Devine.
When the Governor sends in ruthless troubleshooter Kyril Montana to settle things quickly before the lucrative
development is cancelled, a small war threatens to erupt.
