Pressure ulcer (PU) is one of the common problems
that the healthcare providers in all the health care
institutions in Oman and worldwide face when
providing care for patients. The problem of PUs is
considered to be significant in all health settings
affecting around 10% of hospitalized and 5% of
community-living patients. PU occur more often in
bed-bound populations with a reported prevalence
of 26% among hospitalized patients, 43% among
nursing homes patients, and 39% among patients
with spinal cord injuries.
The number of PU cases in Oman is high and the
reasons for that are multi-factorial. In Oman, PUs
cases are being recorded and monitored by the
infection control departments and quality
assurance departments in each hospital. A
preliminary audit was conducted in December,
2012 to determine the incidence rate of PUs in
hospitals, in Oman. Data was received from seven
hospitals. This study will be conducted to explore
nurses’ knowledge and views in relation to pressure
ulcer management in Oman and will use a mixed
method to find in more depth data that will help to
plan a high quality care to patients in all over the
country.
