Course Objective: To help students improve and excel in math as they work to master the
concepts and skills of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards.
Course Description: In Grade 6 Math, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1)
connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of
ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and
extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative
numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing
understanding of statistical thinking.

*Tutorials on various concepts can also be found at www.khanacademy.com
1st Semester Course Overview:
Unit 1 - Number System Fluency
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by
fractions.
Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
Unit 2 - Rate, Ratio and Proportional Reasoning
Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
Unit 3 - Expressions
Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions
Unit 4 - One-Step Equations and Inequalities
Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent
variables.
Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.
2nd Semester Course Overview:
Unit 5 - Rational Explorations: Numbers and their Opposites
Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Unit 6 - Area and Volume
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Unit 7 - Statistics
Develop understanding of statistical variability.
Summarize and describe distributions.

Organization:
1. Each student is responsible for keeping handouts, notes, and all completed work (done in
pencil) for each unit. (1 ½ inch 3- ring binder preferred!)
2. Tests/Quizzes/Exams will be given throughout/or at the end of each unit.
3. Students are also responsible for copying the AGENDA each day in class and showing it to
parents.
Class Participation:
Students’ ideas and thought processes are important to the success in math class this year.
We will constantly reflect on previous lessons as well as current ones.
As a student, you should:
·
Try to be present every day.
·
Be an active participant in class discussions.
·
Question whenever necessary.
·
Do your best and keep organized.
Grading Policy:
Class I - 45% (unit tests, mid unit tests, benchmarks, major projects, essays, performance
tasks, final exams, SLO Post-tests, etc.) (Minimum of 3 per nine weeks)
Class II - 40% (quizzes, minor projects, minor writing assignments, vocabulary quizzes, etc.)
(Minimum of 5 per nine weeks)
Class III - 15% (Homework, classwork, participation, signed papers, etc.) (Minimum of 1 per
week)
Minimum Grades: Teachers will not enter in gradebook a grade less than 50 for any work
attempted. If a student scores below a 50 for a grade, the actual grade should be placed in the
comments area. Students will receive a “0” for work not attempted. This includes but is not
limited to: not turning in the assignment, not filling in any answer blank, filling in answer
blanks with answers not related to the topic, marking an answer document in a pattern or with
all one answer, answering less than half of a test, etc. Final grades will not be less than 50.
Work submitted where a student has either cheated or plagiarized will receive a 0.
Make Up Work: Students are encouraged and allowed to make up all missing work due to
absence. Students who are absent, regardless of reason, may schedule to make up any work
missed within five days of their return to school. This includes In School Suspension (ISS) and
Out of School Suspension (OSS).
Discipline Policy:
Please see school handbook. All school rules and procedures will be followed and enforced in
my classroom.
Classroom Expectations:
Behave in a manner that will not prevent the teacher from teaching and other students from
learning.
