First Grade Achievement Reporting System
A New Look!
First grade will have a new look to the student grade reporting for the 2014-2015 school year.
Our district learning standards and goals have been updated and revised creating the need to
revise the reporting system and student grade card as well.
Explanation of Marking System
New performance level descriptors have been adopted to better match the district standards
and give students, teachers, and parents a clearer picture of each child’s achievement in
relation to the learning standards and goals.
AD = Advanced
Students will receive “AD” when they
successfully demonstrate an application of
explicitly taught knowledge or skills in an
unknown situation or above grade level
expectations.
PR = Proficient
Students will receive “PR” when they can
successfully demonstrate knowledge and skill
level in the “target” zone of district learning
standards and goals.
“TARGET ZONE” for all students!
BA = Basic
Students will receive “BA” when they can
successfully demonstrate the prerequisite or
basic skills needed to meet proficiency of
district learning standards and goals.
BB = Below Basic
Students will receive “BB” when they are
beginning to meet basic level learning
standards and goals, but still need extensive
support from the teacher.
Understanding the Learning Standards
The grade card is a comprehensive list of all knowledge and skills that first grade students need
to master by the end of the school year. Therefore, students receiving PR marks in the first
marking periods indicates the child is “on target” to meet the standard by the end of the school
year. The standards are also written in “teacher language” which may bring about questions.
How are student marks determined?
Published 09-10-14
Teachers will use a variety of methods to collect “evidence” of student learning. Some of these
may include; teacher observation, anecdotal notes, classroom activities, informal assessments
or “snapshot” quizzes, and formal assessments such as a written test.
Example
See the following marking scale for a first grade spelling standard and unit learning goal:
Unit of Instruction Learning Goal
Students can spell words correctly using the “e to the end” rule.
District Spelling Standard
Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring
irregular words. (see 1st Grade - ELA Language Scale, Spelling tab)
AD = Advanced
Students spell 8 words correctly from the unit
practice list and apply the “e to the end” rule
to spell two unknown words correctly and
spell two challenge words using an unknown
(or not yet taught) spelling rule.
PR = Proficient
Students can spell 6 or more words correctly
out of 8 words from the unit practice list and
apply the “e to the end” rule to spell two
unknown words correctly with 100% accuracy
and can spell correctly all unit practice words
in dictation sentences.
BA = Basic
Students can spell 6 or more words correctly
out of 8 words from the unit practice list.
BB = Below Basic
Students do not meet “BA = Basic” or “PR =
Proficient” criteria independently. May need
teacher support to successfully spell words
from the unit list and/or apply the “e to the
end” rule.
