Solving Equations - MFM 1P
The Goal: To end up with your variable on one side and a number on the other.
Rule: If you do something to one side, you must also do it to the other.
Time to do some thinking with a partner!
 Write in the hidden steps that I left out. What did I do to both sides of the equation?
 Check that the solution is correct by subbing it back in and checking that the left side = right side
 Write out an explanation of how to solve the equation
Example 1:
x–7=8
Check the answer:
x=8+7
x = 15
Example 2:
3y – 5 = 7
Check the answer:
3y = 7 + 5
3y = 12
y=4
Example 3:
4y + 8 = 2y + 4
Check the answer:
4y – 2y = 4 – 8
2y = – 4
y=–2
Example 4:
3(w – 5) = 2(2w + 1)
3w – 15 = 4w + 2
3w – 4w = 2 + 15
– w = 17
w = 17

Solving Equations - MFM 1P
Try the following equations on your own and have a partner check the answer for you.
Remember:
 The goal is to end up with your variable on one side and a number on the other.
 If you do something to one side, you must also do it to the other.
Brainstorm:
In your own words, explain all the things that you learned about solving equations from completing this
activity.
Example 5:
2m – 4 = 6
Check the answer:
Example 6:
6n + 8 = 5n – 5
Check the answer:
Example 7:
5x – 4 + 4x = 7 + 2x + 3
Check the answer:
9x – 4 = 2x + 10
